MIA
“Those are stunning, Mia. You have such a flair for pottery.”
“Thanks, George.”
“What a lovely gift. Thank you, so much.”
“I wanted to thank you for not calling the cops the night Dante stumbled into the pharmacy. You took a big chance. Thank you, George. You changed my life for the better.”
“I’m glad you’re happy,” he says, rolling his eyes. “I, on the other hand, am a little miffed that he stole my best worker and good friend away from me.”
“Oh, come now, you big baby. It can’t be that bad.”
“You have no idea. It was almost impossible replacing you and Gina. If I have to listen to one more WOKE tale, I think I may vomit right there behind the counter.”
“Ah, George,” I chuckle. “You’re funny. I miss that wit.”
“So, how are things going with your dream boy?”
“It’s so wonderful, George. I can’t believe how lucky I am. Dante is amazing.”
“How is he with Angelo?”
“Fantastic.”
I haven’t told Geroge the truth about Dante and Angelo yet. It’s not that I’m hiding it, but I’m not ready to shout it from the rooftops just yet.
I enjoy my cup of coffee with George. We talk about how things are going at the pharmacy. He catches me up on all the doctor, patient gossip, and I tell him about my new life as a potter.
“It's been so nice catching up, Mia. You should come see me again soon.”
“I will. I miss you too, George.”
“Here. Take this with you. It’s for Angelo.”
“Ah, thanks, George. Grape. His favorite lollipop flavor.”
“That kid of yours is a gem, Mia. He’s grown into a beautiful boy.”
“He has, hasn’t he?” I beam.
“I have to dash, but thanks for the lovely serving bowl, Mia. You’re a doll.”
“Enjoy it.”
I check my watch once I’m outside. It’s time to fetch Angelo from school. He’s been so happy and bubbly lately. It must be all the fresh air, puppy love, and of course having his very own dad around that brings out the best in him. I know how he feels. I haven’t been this happy since…well, ever, if I’m honest.
My cell phone rings.
“Hey, I was just thinking about you,” I say as I answer the call.
“Good things, I hope.”
“Of course.”
“Where are you?”
“I’m on my way to fetch Angelo. Why?”
