Lucas doesn’t even know I’m pregnant! This is a disaster.

“Where are we going? We can’t stay here. What is this place anyway?”

“It’s an old warehouse. Don’t worry. I know a place where we can hide out for a while. Do you trust me?”

I’m not sure who to trust right now, but I have no choice, so I nod slowly.

“Come. Let’s go.”

Damon takes me by the hand. We leave the warehouse and walk a few blocks to another warehouse, where he knocks on the steel rollup door. A man opens, and the two of them speak in hushed voices to each other in Italian. They’re talking really fast, so I can’t make out what they’re saying.

“We’ll stay here for tonight,” Damon says after a few minutes.

“Here? Where are we?”

“A friend’s”

“Will we be safe here?”

“Yes.”

Damon must be in shock. His friendly, jovial eyes are darker, and his tone is short. He must be in professional mode. I haven’t seen the serious side of him until now. I hope he knows what he’s doing.

Damon takes me to a room with a bed and a basin. It’s rudimentary at best, but beggars can’t be choosers, so I don’t complain. I’m alive thanks to his quick thinking and decisive action. I owe Damon my life.

“Rest here. I’ll be back a bit later. I have to make a few calls. You’ll be safe here; don't worry.”

“Please don’t leave me alone,” I beg, ashamed of my fearful tone.

“I won’t be long. I promise.”

Lucas

My cell phone is blowing up with messages, so I excuse myself from the meeting to answer them.

“Lucas, it’s Andreas.”

“What’s up? I’m in the middle of something, here.”

“Yeah, I know. But this is important.”

“What is it?”

“Emily is missing.”

“What do you mean missing?”

“She left for a doctor’s appointment this morning, and she isn’t back yet. No one can get hold of her on her cell phone, and neither Damon nor Dominick are answering their phones.”

Fuck!

“Send out the team to look for her, Andreas. Damn it! I knew something like this was going to happen. I never should have left her alone.”

“I’m on it, Lucas. I’ll let you know as soon as we have news.”

“I’m coming home.”
