“Dannie. I have to talk to you.”

“Ems! What’s wrong? What’s happened?”

Dannie’s voice is full of trepidation when she hears my tone. My best friend has always known me so well. I need to talk to her about the pregnancy. She’ll know what to do.

“I’m pregnant.”

“What? How? I mean, who? Who’s the father?”

This is gonna sting like hell!

“Lucas.”

“Lucas? I don’t understand.”

“I’m with Lucas. He’s the man who took me.”

“Woah, back up. The gorgeous Lucas you went on one date with? That Lucas?”

“Yes.”

“You’re going to have to back up and explain this to me, Ems. Why would Lucas take you?”

“Because he was David’s boss.”

“What the fuck? You mean his mobster boss?”

“Uh-huh.”

“I don’t believe this.”

“Yes, I know. I was just as shocked as you are when he told me.”

“No shit! What’s his deal, anyway? Why did he take you?”

“To keep me safe. Lucas told me that David was murdered to get to him. He wants to keep me safe.”

“I can’t believe you’ve kept all this from me, Emily! What the hell were you thinking?”

“I know. I know. It’s a mess. I never meant for this to happen, Dannie.”

“A baby! Man, this is heavy. Do you love him?”

“Yes.”

“Holy crap, Ems.”

“Yeah.”

“Does he love you?”

“He does. But I don’t know, Dannie. How can I have a child with a mafia boss?”

“I’m not gonna lie, Emily. This is not ideal. What did he say?”

“I haven’t told him yet. Lucas is away on business. I only just found out. I’m so shocked' I’m not sure how I’m going to tell him. I don’t think I'm ready.”

“Give yourself some time to get used to the idea first. There’s no rush. It’s early days.”
