“Ain’t that the truth? Are you going to eat that?” I ask, pointing to a perfectly untouched chili popper.
“Go ahead,” he says. I eagerly scoop up the treat before he changes his mind.
It isn’t like my brother to leave food on his plate. What’s more, he’s been absent minded all evening. I try one last time to get it out of him.
“Davy, what’s wrong? You’re not yourself. You know you can talk to me, right?”
“I’m fine, Ems. Really. It’s been a busy week. I’m tired.”
I raise one eyebrow while sipping on a margarita.
“Don’t give me the hairy eyeball, Inspector. I’m serious. I’m just tired.”
“Okay. I’ll let you off the hook this time. What’s keeping you so busy?”
“A new client. They’re a big deal. I’m snowed under.”
“Well, you can relax. I’m sure they know, as do we all, that you’re the best. You don't have to work yourself to death to prove anything, David.”
“You’re sweet.”
“Okay, now I know there’s something wrong,” I cackle. “You never call me sweet.”
“Haha. Are we having dessert?”
“I am. No dessert for you, Davy-boy. You didn't finish your meal. Mom will turn in her grave if I allow you to break that golden rule.”
“You’re in a good mood. I take it you’re excited about graduating next month.”
“I can’t wait. I’m done with studying. It’s time to make some money.”
“My poor starving artist sister,” David winks. “Are you going to work at the gallery full-time after that?”
“Yes. They’ve offered me good money. Also, Adam told me I’m free to paint while I’m there, and I can display my work.”
“Of course he did. Having you there is a winning scenario for him. Your art is stunning, Ems.”
“Ahhh… Thanks, Davy. Why don’t you have dinner with Dannie and me next Saturday? I know she’s dying to perv over you,” I tease.
“As much as I’d love to fulfill Dannie’s fantasies, I’m afraid I’m busy next Saturday.”
“A girl?”
“No, I’m afraid it’s much less exciting. My new client invited me to his place for a function.”
“You know who to call if you need a date,” I tease some more.
“Thank you, Cupid, but I’ve got this.”
“I’m just saying. I have a team of friends who are all more than willing to keep you entertained.”
“So, what you’re saying is that you don’t believe that I can scare up a decent date? When did my little sister lose faith in her stud of a brother?”
David pulls a face of mock devastation. He’s so handsome. I love my brother so much.
“No doubts here, Bro. You’re da man.”
The waitress comes over and asks if we’d like to see the dessert menu. I watch her eyes as they explore David’s body. I’m used to it. I’m very proud of him.
