“Please tell me it’s option number two and that you have pictures or can draw me a very detailed picture.”
Heather is a nineteen-year-old college student in the prime of her life. She acts like she doesn’t have a line of guys waiting for her to pay attention to them. She is adorable, looking all sweet and innocent but has the mind of a teenage boy and the mouth of a sailor. My life is boring in comparison.
“I have a three-year-old son who refuses to let me sleep. I work long hours and take extra shifts whenever they are available so I can make ends meet. Plus I have an energy sucker growing in my uterus that makes me feel like a zombie. Oh how I wish I was exhausted because I was up all night having great sex.”
“Wait a minute.” The tone of her voice changes instantly and I realize my mistake. I hadn’t told anyone yet about the pregnancy. I’d been trying to keep it quiet, knowing everyone will start fussing and it’s the last thing I need. I already have Aurora hovering, Bree and Luna constantly checking in on me, and Zac is no better. I know if I called and told him I needed him to come over and carry me from the couch to my bed he would.
I am still trying to get used to the idea of having someone around that actually cares. Aurora is right, he is a pretty great guy, but I hate to be anyone’s burden.
“Hello, earth to Presley,” Heather says, waving her hand in front of my face and I remember I’d just outed myself to the girl that can’t keep a secret if her life depended on it. “So you are having some dirty sex, the kind that leaves you knocked up.”
“Shh,” I try to hush her and she laughs.
“Honestly who is the guy?” She is talking a little too loudly. “I didn’t even know you had a guy.”
“I don’t have a guy.” I grab the tray and start to walk away but hear her scurry after me.
“I know you didn’t get pregnant all by yourself.”
“Will you please keep it down?” This is going to be a very long day.
“So was it a one-night stand, an old flame, wait.” I start to pass out the food to my table hoping she at least waits quietly while I do so. I’m thankful she does because when I turn around and start walking away she again hurries after. “It wasn’t one of those artificial thingies was it? I mean where you go to a clinic and put your legs up in the air. It seems so impersonal. The creation of the baby is such an enjoyable event. Who would want to miss out on the sex part. I mean, or wait, was it really bad sex?”
I push through the swinging doors and drop the tray on the counter. “It was great sex, the toe curling, head spinning, weakening of the legs kind of sex. The kind of sex that makes you forget your name and you know no matter how you wish you could find anyone that would be able to do it half as good as him you know you won’t kind of sex. The fact that I have to see him every single day, and remember the way I felt that one single night, makes it impossible not to want it again and again and you making me relive it now isn’t helping.”
She stares at me, tilts her head to the side and crosses her arms over her chest. “Okay easy fix, jump him, take what you need, girl. Why you wasting time?”
She’s nineteen and her way of thinking isn’t logical. Instead of standing here debating on why it would be a bad idea for Zac and I to go down that road again I turn and walk away. It’s only noon and I am already exhausted. Mentally drained, and damn it, now all I can think about is jumping Zac.
The day goes by in a blur and with only an hour and a half left on my shift, Monica taps me on the shoulder and points to the back booth. “You’ve been requested.”
Glancing to the spot she is pointing I notice Jace and Zac climbing into the corner booth. My heart rate spikes and I start to walk in their direction. That is until I see Heather scurry over, shaking her hips a little too much, as she does when she is working for a big tip. Thinking she has two hot single guys to impress I give her a few minutes before I join her.
“What brings the two of you here?” I ask, leaning against the edge of the bench seat closest to Zac.
“Heard the burgers are killer here,” Jace says without looking up from the menu. “Daxton told us to try the onion rings too.”
“Do you know these guys?” Heather asks.
“Aurora’s fiancé,” I say, pointing to Jace. “Baby daddy.” I point to Zac and watch when Heather’s eyes widen.”
“Oh my God are you serious?” I watch her look over Zac from head to as far as she can see without ducking down to look under the table. Something tells me she’d already checked them both out when they initially entered anyway. “What is wrong with you?” she asks and I remember our earlier conversation. I silently start praying that she doesn’t say anything that will make me want to crawl under the table next to us and hide.
“You need to seriously get on that.” She widens her eyes and I hear Jace snicker. “Toe curling,” she says, throwing her hands up in the air. “Forget your own name, that doesn’t come along every day. Most guys can’t even find the button if you get what I’m saying and you got all that and more in one shot. For the love of God, get on that.” With that Heather walks away and I feel my cheeks heat knowing both guys are now watching me.
So I have one of two choices, I can tuck tail and hide, letting Heather or even Monica wait on them. Or I can go with option two.
I look over at Jace then to Zac shrugging as if I have no idea what in the hell just happened. “She’s a little insane, we all think she’s been drinking before shift. Says the most random shit. So what will it be, guys? Burgers and onion rings each?”
Ignoring the confused looks I wait without cracking even a little. I just wish my body would stop reacting whenever Zac is near. It definitely remembers every single touch and wants a repeat.
ChapterEleven
Zac
The entire time I ate, I continued to look up to find the young girl watching Jace and me. She couldn’t be more than eighteen, twenty tops. She’d been staring, peeking up over the stack of cups, or the pile of dishes in the busboy’s tub. She’d smile, duck out of the way and be gone for a short time, only to reappear once again.
“What do you think that was all about?” I nod my head in the direction of our Peeping Tom. Jace glances over and smiles.
