Jonathan nearly called Kellan back, but if the young shifter was struggling with control issues, the last thing he needed to be involved in was trouble. Besides, he wasn’t fully trained to combat evil, as were the Van Helsings and a fair number of the Harker wolf pack.
Jonathan closed his eyes for a moment and focused, pulling upon the mental pathway he shared with his pack members. He thought of Dwayne, knowing he’d connect to that member.
Jonathan?asked Dwayne, a sense of alarm in his voice.
I’m on campus, and something feels off, stated Jonathan, opening his eyes to look at his surroundings in an attempt to suss out what was tripping his inner alarms.
Kellan is on campus, returned Dwayne.
He’s fine. I was just with him. He’s headed to a bar with friends, supplied Jonathan, wanting to alleviate Dwayne’s worry. All women, I might add.
Dwayne’s laughter filled their mental pathway.
Jonathan couldn’t stop a smile from forming.
I’m looking at the schedule right now. There are two slayers in the vicinity. Neither has reported any issues. Want me to dispatch more?asked Dwayne.
Not yet, but have some on standby, just in case,Jonathan said, hoping that what he was feeling was nothing.
Will do, Dwayne replied.
Jonathan was about to close the mental connection to Dwayne when a mellifluously haunting laugh drifted through the night air. His stomach dropped as his wolf’s hackles rose. He knew that laughter.
He stiffened. It couldn’t be.
The Weird Sisters didn’t make a habit of leaving Dracula’s castle and its surrounding grounds, and for a good reason. They were loose cannons. Batshit crazy femme fatales. The few times in the last hundred-plus years that Jonathan knew of them venturing from the castle grounds had all been with Dracula. And none of the times had been outside of Europe.
Dracula wouldn’t be in Grimm Cove, would he? And he certainly wouldn’t have come with the Weird Sisters in tow if he was, right?
The man was eccentric and an asshole, but he wasn’t stupid. He knew the sisters couldn’t be trusted to be around the general public.
Jonathan?Dwayne asked, reminding Jonathan that he’d yet to close their connection. What’s wrong?
Nothing,Jonathan returned quickly. If what he’d heard was right and the Weird Sisters and Dracula were in the area, he didn’t want his men anywhere near them.
He turned in a slow circle, his wolf rising as Jonathan sniffed the air, hunting for any signs of the master vampire or his female companions. While he couldn’t smell anything that indicated they were close, every fiber of his being said it was true—they were in Grimm Cove.
His thoughts ran to Kellan and how the young shifter had brought up the Weird Sisters out of seemingly nowhere. It was too coincidental. There had to be a reason for it. One the young shifter more than likely wasn’t even aware of.
Did they have their sights set on Kellan now? Was he their next victim?
The way Kellan had seemed to commiserate with Jonathan, summing up exactly how Jonathan had felt about his time in Castle Dracula with them, rang in his head. Had the young wolf-shifter really gleaned that from simply reading Stoker’s novel, or did he have firsthand knowledge of it all somehow?
Jonathan’s heart thudded loudly, to the point that he heard nothing beyond it. There was no way in hell he’d let Dracula or the Weird Sisters anywhere near Kellan.
As much as Jonathan didn’t want Dwayne involved out of fear for the man’s safety, he was Kellan’s father.
Send men to join Kellan at the bar, Jonathan said.Pull from our university-aged slayers so as to not alert anyone of a possible issue. Keep them close to Kellan until sunrise.
Is my son in danger?Dwayne asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
I’m sure it's nothing, but to be safe, do as I instructed,Jonathan replied. He closed the connection to Dwayne and let his wolf up a little more.
He heard the faint echo of familiar feminine laughter coming from the direction of the woods that were just off campus. Jonathan wasted no time, hurrying in that direction. He was almost to the woods when he caught another scent. One he’d not smelled in four years. It held faint notes of cinnamon.
