Follow it, his inner voice repeated.

Jonathan strained to keep from doing just that.

Follow her!

That did it. It gave him enough control to prevent his mouth from changing forms. When he glanced at the other men, he found them both watching him closely as if worried he might do something stupid.

Jonathan jerked and went to the assailant who was nearest him. He bent and grabbed the man by the hair, lifting the man’s head. He studied the human’s face and memorized his scent, wanting to be sure he could track the man later. He did the same to the rest of the bad guys.

“Uh, what’s he doing?” asked Leo.

“You don’t want me to answer that,” replied Dwayne with a shake of his head.

Jonathan continued to sniff the men who had attacked the young woman. He growled when he realized he was close to the one who had been manhandling the young woman upon Jonathan’s arrival. The urge to sink his teeth into the man’s throat and tear it out was great.

Leo kept watching him closely. “No, I really do want it explained because he looks like he might shift forms and take a chunk out of them. That or piss on the guy.”

Dwayne huffed. “Hey, he could do both. Let’s not limit his options, okay?”

Lifting his head, Jonathan met Dwayne’s gaze.

No words were spoken, but each shifter understood what was happening. That Jonathan was making sure these men could be found easily later and dealt with properly then—in a way that would mean they’d never again harm a woman.

“Oh, goodie, you’re both doing that weird-ass shifter thing,” said Leo. “Where you stare at each other and talk mentally.”

“Nah, we’ve not said a word mentally or not,” corrected Dwayne. “Can I ask you something, Leo?”

Leo nodded.

“You good with these guys attacking two young women?” questioned Dwayne.

“Hardly,” stated Leo, squaring his shoulders.

“And you think the human authorities will make sure they never do it again?” asked Dwayne.

Leo was quiet for a second before shaking his head. “No. I think they’ll be held a few weeks or months before they’re released because of jail overcrowding. Then they’ll be on the street again doing the same shit.”

“He’ll make sure they aren’t,” said Dwayne with a nod in Jonathan’s direction.

Leo’s gaze slid to Jonathan. “You’d do that?”

“I would,” replied Jonathan, not bothering with a pretty lie or false niceties.

Dwayne then tipped his head slightly. “Did y’all notice the Grimm Cove College sweatshirt the one girl had in her bag?”

“Really?” asked Leo. “So, they just happened to be in a bind here in Detroit at the same time that we’re leaving the airport and have ties to Grimm Cove?”

“It would appear so,” stated Jonathan.

“What are the odds of that?” asked Leo, his expression saying he thought it was fishy.

Dwayne was silent for a second. “Slim.”

“And they happen to be here right when all hell is breaking loose around here?” questioned Leo. “Something is off.”

Jonathan’s wolf agreed. It still wanted him to chase down the bus and find the young woman with the broken glasses. It wanted him to make sure she was indeed alive and well and that nothing else bad happened to her.

Try as he might to temper the wolf, it continued to push at him.
