Hannah and Temperance were enrolled in high school in Grimm Cove and seemed to like it. Though Jonathan strongly suspected Hannah’s stance on boys interfering with her educational aspirations was changing. More than once, she’d mentioned a boy from school. Each time she did, Dwayne had to later talk Jonathan down from wanting to hunt for the boy to speak with him.
Bram found it all highly amusing, or at least he had until he’d found Temperance kissing a young man at the edge of the Van Helsing estate, after dark one night. Apparently, the young man was a student at Grimm Cove University and had met Temperance at Hobbs ice cream stand.
Bram, who was of no relation whatsoever to Temperance, had suddenly taken on a fatherly role, and had put the fear of God into the young man, chasing him off.
From the little bit Jonathan had caught of the ordeal, he strongly suspected that young man was still running, terrified ever to set foot in Grimm Cove again, let alone get near Temperance.
Mina seemed fine with the results.
Marcy, on the other hand, had scolded Bram for daring to interfere with young love.
Jonathan just hoped that Bram would do the same if he ever saw a young man near Hannah.
Willa ran up alongside Jonathan, her white coat a sharp contrast to the dark woods surrounding them. His mate was beautiful in both forms. She nipped playfully at him and then darted ahead, catching up with Hannah.
Jonathan’s wolf was too focused on watching its mate’s backside to worry about being shown up. Had their daughter not been on the run with them, Jonathan would have done his best to entice his mate into joining with him in wolf form—again.
Hannah leaped over a small creek and landed with ease, looking over her shoulder at Jonathan. She was an interesting mix of her parents. She had mostly white fur with gray-tipped ears and paws. Her wolf was smaller than most other female shifters he’d encountered in his life. She was wearing a pink collar that had been a gift from Jonathan for her to wear while running in the woods around Grimm Cove. The hope was that if someone saw her and he not be present to protect her, they’d think she was a dog and not lose their shit or worse. The collar had the silver cross from Willa’s necklace fixed into the leather so it wouldn’t make contact with Hannah’s skin.
When Jonathan had given his wife the necklace and her journal, she’d ended up a heap of tears and laughter before knocking him onto their bed and showing her appreciation for keeping the items safe all these years.
Something rustled in the woods, and Jonathan caught the scent of another wolf. One he was sick and tired of seeing as of late.
Something dark emerged from the trees right in front of Hannah.
Willa jumped in front of Hannah, putting herself between their daughter and the newcomer.
Jonathan snarled and leaped in the air, clearing both his daughter and his wife before landing in front of them. He found himself snout to snout with a man who seemed to make it his life’s mission to taunt Jonathan.
What the bloody hell are you doing here?Jonathan demanded as he thrust his thoughts down the mental pathway he shared with the wolf before him.I told you to leave town.
The black wolf didn’t back down. Not that Jonathan expected him to.
Jonathan,Willa said, her voice filling his head.No fighting. You swore.
I never promised not to fight with him,Jonathan returned.I promised not to kill him. There is a difference.
Dad,Hannah said, her voice full of concern.Lucian isn’t here to cause problems.
Why is he here then?Jonathan demanded.
The damn wolf-shifter had refused to leave Grimm Cove. Jonathan wasn’t sure where Lucian was staying, but he’d kept resurfacing over the last two weeks.
Calm yourself,Lucian said, his voice as smug as he was.
Jonathan growled.
The black wolf met Jonathan’s gaze.I have information you might find useful.
Hannah moved up alongside Jonathan.
He tried to push her back, away from Lucian, but his daughter wasn’t having any of it.
She eased even closer to the deranged shifter, and Jonathan snarled, baring his teeth at her.
Get back!
She cast him an annoyed look but didn’t back up.
