Harlan rolled his eyes.

“Besides Tanya, who else?”

“Last time we had a beer together he was complaining about that bitch Glenda Crandall. He took her out a few times and after he lost interest, she started acting like she owned him andturned into—you know—one of them stalkers. Following him and watching him all the fuckin time. It gave Ray the creeps.”

“Yeah, I believe that. I know Glenda and her sister Brenda.”

Ted grinned.

“Was Ray at odds with anybody else?”

“There could have been other women on the go, but he didn’t mention any others to me. Everybody liked Ray—especially women. He was a great guy.”

“You take it easy, Kyle.” I gave him one of my cards. “Sorry for your loss. You think of anything that could help me find who did this, give me a call.”

“Yeah, I will, Sheriff.”

Kyle had a look in his eye that made me think I wouldn’t be the only one looking for Ray’s killer.

Twin Fashion. Shelby.

Before leaving Shelby to go back to the station, I drove to the dress shop owned by Glenda Crandall and her twin sister Brenda. The three of us walked in the front door and two ladies were looking through the racks of clothes. Brenda was behind the counter and Glenda was nowhere in sight.

Harlan and I could both tell the twins apart. Brenda wore her hair a bit longer and her roots were showing. The girls weren’t especially pretty, but they weren’t ugly either. Both unnatural blondes and both of them had high opinions of themselves. Sevens pretending to be tens. Like that.

“Glenda here?” I asked.

“She’s in the back unpacking new stock.” Brenda hadn’t been civil to me since Billy dumped her. Guess she blamed me. Oh, well.

“Thanks.” Without asking permission, I went through the door into the stockroom to talk to Glenda. We hadn’t parted ongood terms, and she wouldn’t be happy to see me show up in her girly store.

She glanced up and sneered at me—a face I was familiar with. “What are you doing here, Travis?”

“Ray Dangerfield is dead, Glenda, and I want to ask you some questions about that. His brother said you and Ray were a couple for a while.”

“We broke up.”

“Yeah, you and Ray broke up and then you started stalking him, the same way you stalked me when I said I didn’t want to be a couple.”

She laughed. “I never stalked you, Travis. You wish.”

“No, I don’t, Glenda. I never wished that. Tell me where you were last night between ten and two.”

“Home in bed sleeping.”

“No alibi at the time of Ray’s murder. Got it. You’ll have to come with me to the station.”

“No way I’m going to your little Mickey Mouse jail, Travis.”

“The man you were stalking is dead, Glenda, and I have no choice but to bring you in on suspicion of murder.”

“I want a lawyer.”

“You’ll get a phone call as soon as I book you.”

“This is bullshit. I didn’t kill Ray.”

“Tell me who did.” I tilted my head towards Harlan, and he grabbed Glenda and cuffed her hands behind her back. I’d been clawed once today already and would soon have the scar to prove it.
