“I’m just saying it, so you’re not worried I’m setting out to hurt her.”
“It could be revenge.”
I just stared at her.
“Not that I think you’re up to that at all,” she added.
“Definitely not. I’m here to get my woman back.” And with that I grabbed my drink off the counter and looked to find Tori looking like a deer stuck in the headlights. She was apparently meeting Nurse Richards but seeing me, she looked to be weighing coming over to us, or just up and bouncing up out of there. I wanted to laugh, but held it inside. I helped her out by leaving before she had to make a choice. I would get my time with her. It was too soon to move in on her now.
But fate had plans to bring us together whether Tori wanted it or not.
One of her patients landed in the ICU and she needed to do her rounds on the little boy. I had been talking to Jessica, an ICU nurse, that had been giving me those I-want-to-fuck-you eyes since I started working here. Jessica was not going to get it. Not enough melanin for me. I looked up from Jessica who was twirling her dark curly hair around her finger to find Tori walking into 118A and found a reason to leave a disappointed Jessica to investigate.
“Hey Dr. Clark.” I was happy to see her wearing just her scrubs so that I could get a good view of her ass on her bottoms. Still round, still perfect.
She seemed surprised to see me. “Oh, hey Chris- I mean, Dr. Powers.”
“Chico is your patient?”
“Yeah, he is. I’ve been hoping that the immunotherapy Dr. Patrick in Oncology started him on, would be effective. He’s not doing well with it apparently.”
“Not at the moment. He’s in renal failure, his heart has been working too hard, and he’s developed an infection, but I have a plan. I hope to see some improvement in his functions by morning. I’ll see with his labs in the morning.”
“Oh? Can you tell me more about your plan?”
She couldn’t see it, but inside I was dancing a jig.
Yeah, baby, I’ll tell you more. Whatever you want.
“Sure. Let’s step out here and we can talk.”
The two of us headed to an unoccupied nurses' station where we could discuss Chico’s situation and my plans for his care. In the middle of our talk, I could feel someone’s eyes on us ,and looked up to find the nurse everyone was calling Chet, looking on. I didn’t like the angry look in his eyes but didn’t have time to worry about it yet. I filled Tori in on my thoughts.
“And you think he’ll respond to the IV antibiotics in time?”
“I think there’s a good chance for it. I contacted Dr. Volt’s team and they have approved the cocktail. The pharmacy will be delivering it within the hour.”
I watched as her big brown eyes lit up for the first time since I’ve been back to the hospital, and I wondered why she looked so sad all the time. She needed her spirts lifted. Vivid memories of how I would get her to feel good in my bed or in hers, entered my mind. My dick stiffened.
“I’m glad I can get you to smile, Tori.”
Her eyes turned serious. “Whatever hope we can give these children makes me happy.”
“Me too. That’s why we’re in this. That’s what we said when we first met.”
Our eyes held and I imagined she was remembering as I was. She broke the connection first when she looked away.
“I guess I should get back to the clinic.” She looked down at her watch.
“I understand. Why don’t we make some time to talk? We have a lot to catch up on.” She seemed to think on it a moment before agreeing.
“Yeah, that would be nice. We haven’t talked since …” She stopped herself.
“I’m still sorry to hear about your dad, Tori.”
I watched as she took a deep breath. “I have so many great memories with him, my mom, and my siblings. It’s hard to stay sad for long. Gosh, it’s been over a year and you’d think it wouldn’t hit me like this. But the holidays always bring up those feelings of missing. You know?”
“You know I do.” We both had our losses. Our family. Patients. Our relationship.
