Our gazes lock, and the moment between us tenses before she clears her throat and pulls away from me.
“I’m glad you’re okay,” she whispers.
Without thinking, I place a hand over hers and gently squeeze her fingers. Her eyes widen as they latch onto mine, and I slowly start to inch toward her before brushing some strands of hair framing the sides of her face.
Another knock on the door interrupts the moment, and she pulls away from me abruptly, making me miss her heat almost immediately.
“Trevor,” Billy says from the doorway, making his way into the room despite the other teammates trying to stop him. “I’m sorry, man. I was drunk, and I didn’t know what I was saying, I just …”
His words trail off when he glances towards Gracie. “I’m sorry, okay?” he stutters, then combs his fingers through his hair and shakes his head. “I didn’t mean to cause any trouble. You have to believe that.”
“It’s alright. We forgive you.” My expression stays hard, but Gracie’s soft words cut into the air and shocks me.
“You made a mistake. We all make mistakes, and I’m sure Trevor will find a way to let it go and put it behind him too, right babe?”
There’s a stiff smile on my face still, but she doesn’t blink till I sigh and reply. “You screwed us over, Billy, and that was not cool. I’m so pissed at you, but fighting you now will only give the media more to fuss about. I just want this to be over.”
“Right.” Billy answers with a sigh, then backs out of the room after that.
Once we’re alone, I face Gracie with a questioning look. “What was that? He put us through a lot of trouble, made the past two weeks tough for you, and you just forgive him?”
“We all do stupid stuff, Trevor. You, of all people, know that, and you get forgiven for it all the time. You hurt me once, but I forgave you and decided to help repair your reputation. I think you can do the same for Billy.” She arches a brow and adds defiantly, once again showing me that fire that attracts me. “Don’t you think?”
The corners of her lips quirk up with a smile, and I find myself so drawn to her that my breath hitches in my throat.
“Right,” I whisper, sounding huskier than I anticipated.
“Good,” she says with a light chuckle. “Now put on a smile. Don’t forget those guys out there will come in here to see you soon, and we still need to convince them that we’re a loving couple.”
Chapter 15
Gracie
We’re both quiet as I lead Trevor to his room. I help him sit on the bed and let out a deep breath.
“Thanks,” he whispers, grabbing my wrist. I lick my lips before meeting his gaze.
“Thanks for everything, Gracie,” he murmurs. “I mean it.”
There’s nothing I can say to him at that moment. My heart thuds so fast, and that swoony feeling that clouds my judgment each time he’s near intensifies.
“I’ll make us something to eat,” I say through the lump in my throat, then slowly peel my hand out of his.
Minutes later, while I’m in the kitchen, Trevor limps in slowly and pulls out a chair.
“You’re supposed to keep your weight off that leg,” I scold in a light tone, shaking my head when he flashes me a cheeky grin. “Don’t play cute with me. You should obey your doctor’s instructions so that you get better.”
He rests his chin in his hands and focuses on me again. I recall seeing the cute doctor blushing at him when I entered the hospital room earlier. Even a blind man would have noticed that she was flirting with him.
I roll my eyes, and Trevor catches my expression.
“What is it?” he asks.
“Nothing,” I lie through gritted teeth, then nibble on my lower lip a little as the sting of jealousy bites through me.
I don’t care about him flirting with her,I tell myself, even as the heated flush burns a path right through my chest.
“Doesn’t seem like nothing. You’re all flushed, and you’re glaring at that pasta like it pissed you off or something.”
