I laughed, sucking in a deep breath. “I meant thank you for muffling my shout. That would have been embarrassing.”

“No worries, babe. I just wanted to mess with you a little.” Blaze turned to check out the scratch marks on the back of his shoulders. “Nice job.”

After taking a few minutes to freshen up, I gathered my clothes and followed Blaze into the bedroom. Both Cash and Daire were passed out on opposite sides of the bed. Blaze and I tried to settle ourselves in the middle between them.

In no time, Blaze snored softly, totally out. I wished sleep would come so easy. Now that someone had tried to kill me twice in as many days, all I could do was lie there and blink in the dark.

When the darkness outside the window began to thin, I gave up on sleep and decided to go in search of some water or maybe a coffee. I figured Raina and the Gods would be getting up soon to get ready for class. There would be no class for me today. Not until I bought a few new things and figured out whether or not attending campus would be safe. I didn’t think the people after us would try another campus attack, but who really knew?

Exiting the basement, I quietly padded into the kitchen. The sound of water running reached me before I entered. I found Knight standing at the counter, preparing his morning coffee. He glanced up as I entered, surprised to see me.

“Good morning,” he said with a friendly smile. “You’re up early. Couldn’t sleep?”

I shook my head, taking a seat at the kitchen table. “Not really. Sorry that we barged in on you like this. We’ll try not to stay long.”

“It’s all good. Really, I don’t mind. Want coffee?” Knight pulled a second mug from the cupboard.

“I would love one. Thanks.” Being around Knight was relatively easy. He was the nicest of Raina’s three guys. I tried not to think about his kinky nature. She really shouldn’t have told me about that.

To avoid awkward conversation, I browsed on my phone while sipping my coffee. Knight busied himself making an omelet for breakfast. He asked if I would like one, but I politely declined. I couldn’t handle food right now.

Knight came to sit with me at the table. He took a sip of his coffee, eyeing me over the rim of the mug. “Clover, I want to apologize for what I said at the party. When I said that I didn’t know what you saw in Daire. That was shitty of me.”

I gaped at him in surprise. I sure hadn’t been expecting that. “It’s okay. Don’t worry about it. I’m sure a lot of people wonder what I see in him.”

Trying to lighten the strange mood, I did my best to laugh it off. Knight frowned into his plate as he cut a piece of his omelet.

“Some people probably wonder the same thing about Raina and the three of us. And they would be right to think that way. That’s why I should’ve kept my mouth shut. It’s not my business.” There was a gentleness in his eyes that made me feel comfortable despite the topic at hand.

The Gods were no better than the Angels. Not really. They’d proven themselves to be willing to do some pretty shady things. I used to worry about Raina. I didn’t like that she was getting so involved with them. They weren’t all bad though, and neither were the Angels.

It meant a lot to me that Knight had apologized even though he didn’t have to. Maybe staying here wouldn’t be so bad.

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

CLOVER

While Raina and the Gods went to campus for the day, the Angels and I headed to the mall to do some necessary shopping. The mafia guys that had been watching the house came with us to act as a security detail. I had to admit, I did feel a lot better knowing they were around.

I sure didn’t enjoy having to use some of my student loan money to buy more clothing. We were waiting to hear from the fire department about when we could go into the house and check on our things. Most of the house was okay, although there was some smoke and water damage that would have to be properly cleaned. Since the house was a rental, the owner had to be notified about the situation as well.

“Looks like we’re moving,” Daire said after getting off the phone to the landlord. “Once they determine it was arson, he’s not going to want us to stay there once it’s fixed up. We’re a liability now.”

“Well, we are. We’ll wait for this all to blow over, and then we’ll find a new place.” Cash was matter of fact about it. “All that matters is we’re alive and safe. I don’t give a shit about the house.”

It was late afternoon when we got back to the Gods’ house. Daire went to take a shower while I put away a few groceriesthat we bought. I didn’t want to be eating the Gods’ food without giving back.

Raina and Gage were the first to arrive after their classes were done for the day. The latest news on campus was that nobody knew anything about the dead man in the restroom. If the police knew his identity or anything else about him, they weren’t sharing. Luckily, nobody seemed to link me to any of it. The campus security cameras were in high traffic areas. Main halls and entry points. Nothing that should indicate I’d been in the restroom with him.

Gage disappeared upstairs. The Angels were in the basement, doing their best to stay out of the Gods’ way. It gave Raina and I time to hang out alone.

She promptly went to the pantry in search of a snack. Spying the double stuffed Oreos I’d bought, she let out a little squeal and grabbed the package. “Did you buy these? Do you mind?”

“Yeah, I bought them earlier today. Go hard. A bag of cookies is the least I can do after you guys took us in.” I was more than happy to share with my best friend. Even though our guys were still divided in many ways, we were starting to feel like a big family.

Raina tore open the bag of cookies, stuffing one in her mouth. “Oh my god, so good. Want some?”

I laughed, shaking my head at her ridiculous enthusiasm. “No, I’m good. I had lunch while we were out.”
