I also knew he protected her like a fucking Rottweiler.
"Then I might be a little more inclined to scrape my boots,” he said.
"It's not just Roberto. It's too complicated for one person. But he's at the top, or close to it.”
"You got proof?”
"Does the bullet hole in my chest count?" I asked.
He leaned forward, bracing his elbows on the small Formica table. "Tell me what you know.”
I filled him in, pausing to answer his questions along the way. His expression remained impassive until I got to the part about the ownership of the cabin. He obviously didn't think it was a coincidence either.
By the time I'd caught him up, our plates and cups were empty.
"Where are you holed up?" he asked.
"Not important." Daisy had a complicated history with Blackwell Falls and its residence. The last thing she needed was to be dragged into our mess.
“How many guns do you need?” Hawk asked.
“A lot,” I said.
He turned to look out the food court’s wall of glass. “Things move slow this time of year.”
I followed his gaze out the window and saw that it had started to snow. “How slow?”
He shrugged. “Could be… a week, maybe two, for a significant order.”
“I’ll pay a premium if you make it a week," I said.
“You’ll pay a premium anyway,” he said.
I nodded. I couldn’t blame him for taking advantage of the situation. Business was business.
“Need cars?” he asked.
I shook my head. I’d planned to ask him for a couple of cars but had decided against it. I hadn’t been thrilled by Willa’s insistence that we not involve Reva, but she was right.
Reva was like a mother to us. It was too dangerous.
And if we couldn’t find a way to supply ourselves, we’d have to go back to the house. On the plus side, our place could be defended — assuming Rafe could get us the manpower to defend it and Hawk could get me the guns — and I would be able to use the wireless network to access our data in the cloud.
Having access to our cars and bikes was a bonus.
“I’ll see what I can do,” Hawk said, throwing his used napkins on his empty paper plate. “Anything else?”
I shook my head and we stood to shake hands. Life really had turned upside down if I was shaking hands with the fucking VP of the Blackwell Blades.
“Don’t get yourself killed out there,” Hawk said.
“Not planning on it,” I said.
He turned away and I watched him make his way through the crowd, one thought echoing in my mind.
It’s not me I’m worried about.
