“Like punishment?”

“Like a reward.”

“Fascinating.” My pulse thumps heavy in my veins. “I can’t wait for next weekend.”

“Same.” She kisses me full on the mouth, a soft promise that our time apart will be full of research.

To that end, as soon as I’m on the train, I text Alex, giving him a two-hour heads-up that I’m about to appear on his doorstep. I get off the train and get right on the subway, going straight to his place before I even go home.

He gives my backpack the once over. “Are you coming or going?”

“Just got home from a weekend in the country.”

“Hazel is still tolerating your presence?”

I can’t deny the truth there. “I remain confused about her attachment to me as well, but I’m doing my best to be a good companion. Which is why I’m here.”

“Your mysterious and urgent request for an audience.” He sweeps his hand into the gloomy foyer. “Come on in. Do you want coffee?”

“Sure.” I follow him into the kitchen.

“What’s the urgent issue we need to discuss?”

“My girlfriend recognized someone at your party. I would like an introduction.”

“Of course. Who was it?”

“Zeke Devereaux.”

Alex’s expression doesn’t change. “Okay.”

“You aren’t curious why?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because she writes erotica and Zeke owns a kink club.”

“Right.”

Alex’s expression changes then, from careful acknowledgment to naked curiosity. “Unless it’s more than research.”

“No, it’s research.”

“Hands on research?”

“Are you asking as a nosy friend?”

The corners of his mouth twitch. “Not exactly. Asking more as Zeke’s silent partner in the club.”

“What?” I rub my hand over my mouth. “Wow, you think you know someone…”

“You know me just fine. I don’t think you want the ins and outs of how people have sex.”

“No.”

“Right.”
