The three weaker wolves scrambled to obey, but their leader lifted his chin, staring me down.

Alpha. My wolf snarled the word, reading the fourth wolf.

Not our Alpha,I thought back. I was alpha by designation, not as powerful as Kane, so I wasn’t pack Alpha. But I was plenty dominant enough to deal with this lot, even if this asshole wanted to test me.

I paced forward, bumping chest to chest with the shorter male. “Think about where you are right now, assface, and get a whiff. These are humans. Every last one of them thinks you’re on something right now. Step. Outside.”

His upper lip lifted in a sneer, but he didn’t argue. He gripped the metal door handle hard enough to dent it and snatched it open, tearing one of the hinges free from the frame in the process.

If I hadn’t been furious before, that would have pushed me over the edge. I followed him outside and yanked the door back into its frame. A small part of me rebelled at the idea of being unable to see my mate so soon after finding her, but the humans wouldn’t hurt her. The door was wedged in tight, and hopefully, that would give me the time I needed to deal with these dicks and then get her safely to medical attention.

Brielle. She was a doctor and closer than any hospitals this far out. My metabolism and the adrenaline coursing through me had already burned off the alcohol, so I was safe to drive and way faster than waiting on an ambulance.

“Who do you think you are, rogue, coming in here and putting your hands on our girl?”

I stiffened, focusing on the matter at hand as I turned to face the four shifters. They stood shoulder to shoulder, arms crossed over their chests like schoolyard bullies.

“I think I’m the third in command of Packs Blackwater and Caelestis, serving under High Alpha Kane of the nine great packs, and I’d like to know what you assholes thought you were doing, pursuing a woman in wolf form and traipsing naked into ahumanbar.”

That gave the leader pause. I saw him take a sniff, as if my scent alone could tell him the truth of my words.

Don’t be a dumbass,I mentally urged him.Take the high road and walk away so I can take care of my mate in peace.

“I already told you,” he said with a growl. “We were followingourwoman. You’re the one in the wrong here. We scented her in the woods, and we’re claiming her. She’s unmated, and she’s mine.”

Nope. He chose dumbass.

I closed the distance between us before he could say another stupid word, wrapping my fingers around his throat and squeezing.

“Listen up, you stupid, arrogant fuck, because I’m not going to repeat myself. That woman is human, and she is not yours to mess with. She needs medical attention, which I’m going to see to it that she gets. If you ever pull a stunt like this again, I’ll personally ensure you’re run off this continent, and no decent pack will take you. As it is, the high alpha will be personally contacting your Alpha. Names, pack affiliation, and ranks. Now!” I snapped the last word, squeezing a little tighter before easing off enough that he could inhale to answer me.

Each of them mumbled off their information, and the other three bolted for the woods the second they’d done so. I kept my grip on the strongest, cutting off his airway again.

“I’m going to go back in there and help that woman, and if I ever see your sorry mug again, I’m going to tear it off your skull. Nod once so I know we understand each other.”

His face was beginning to turn purple, but he nodded. I released him with a shove, sending him flat on his bare ass on the pavement.

“Run before I change my mind,” I snarled, fangs lengthening as he scrabbled backward, shifting and racing toward the tree line without another glance.

I waited a few heartbeats, using my wolf’s sharper sense of hearing to follow them deeper into the forest, until they were completely out of earshot.

Only then did I exhale and step back into the dim light of the bar.

My mate was no longer shaking—seizing, if the nursing student was correct about that—but hadn’t woken.

“They left? Thank God.” The nursing student looked worriedly over my shoulder, as if I’d have let them wander back in behind me.

“They’re gone. But everyone should take buddies into the parking lot tonight, just in case,” I said, scanning the bar and getting a bunch of nods from the other patrons. Most were staring, but none had gotten down on the floor.

She nodded warily. “I found epilepsy medication in her pocket, so this isn’t a new condition for her, but I still think she needs to be checked out by a doctor. She should wake up soon, and we can ask her where she wants to go. The hospital’s an hour drive, and she might have a primary care closer by that opens early, or an emergency line she can call.”

I blinked, realizing I was about to have to pry my mate out of this woman’s hands to get her to Brielle and Olivia. She wasn’t going to a human hospital; she was going back to the Maiden’s Enclave, where she would be protected by my pack and could rest. But the determined cant to the other woman’s chin told me she was serious.

“I’ll drive her to the hospital. We can lay her across the back seat.”

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but I don’t know you, and I’m not sending a defenseless woman off with a stranger, even a well-meaning one.” She swallowed hard under my stare, and I knew she could sense the beast lurking just below the surface.

The temptation to let my eyes flare, to scare her into complying, was strong. But if I did that, I was no better than the men that chased her into my arms.
