MILA

One full dayhad passed since Killian left. I didn’t know where he went off to, and Maverick and Silas wouldn’t tell me.

And it was nighttime. I was in the living room with the TV on, though I wasn’t paying attention to what was showing.

Rachel had left for her house hours before, and Maverick and Silas were… well, I didn’t know where they were.

Was this going to be my life from now on?

Just hanging around the house waiting for my men to come home?

I sat up when I heard the front door open.

“Angel,” Silas called out. My heart picked up in excitement. Even I could see how pathetic this was, when I suddenly felt like a puppy excited that its owner was home.

I shook my head at my own thoughts but didn’t respond to Silas.

Heavy footsteps sounded out through the house, and then he was in front of me. His brown eyes were light but tired, yet a beautiful smile graced his lips, reminding me of the reason why I had fallen so hard for him back in New Orleans.

He was in a black T-shirt that clung to his muscular form, making my mouth go dry from the simple sight alone. Dark jeansand black boots completed the simple yet sexy outfit, and his black hair was a messy array on top of his head.

His grin widened. “You keep looking at me like that, angel, and I will forget all about the treat I bought you and fuck you right here on this couch.”

“Treat?” My eyes moved down, and I noticed he was holding a small white box. I didn’t know which I wanted more. “Why can’t I have both?”

He laughed and walked closer to me, placing the box on my lap. And another item on top of the box. My surprised eyes met his smiling ones.

“A phone? You got me a phone.”

“And a treat,” he added, as if that was really important now.

I grabbed the sleek rose-gold phone, and it turned on. I didn’t know why I jumped when it did. I could feel Silas’ eyes focused intently on me.

“Aren’t you afraid I might call the cops?”

He smirked. “You can try, but I do have a few of those fuckers on my payroll, so call away. But I will warn you, you might not be able to sit for a while.”

I rolled my eyes. Of course, they would have a few dirty cops on their side. Playfulness aside, I knew this phone meant more than just a phone. It meant they trusted me just as much as I trusted them.

I reached up and grabbed his hand. “Thank you.”

I watched as the big man softened from the simple words uttered from my lips.

“You’re welcome, baby. Why don’t you open the box and see what I got you from Aunt Jo’s Goodies?”

“Aunt Jo’s Goodies?”

“Yeah, it’s a pretty popular pastry place nearby. I’ll take you there someday. Wouldn’t my baby like that?”

I smiled a little and nodded. “It’s a date.”

Face serious, he grasped my chin gently and said, “I’ll take you on a million dates if that’s what you want from me.”

I could feel my heart melting from his words. Fuck, but what was he turning me into? What happened to the hard, cynical girl before the brothers?

Was it even smart to be so soft in such a cruel world?

Before I could get out of my musing, Silas said, “Speaking of, how would you feel about being my date to our club's opening in three days?”
