He wrapped his arm around me and led us to the front door. “No, I don’t,” he said.
It took me a moment to realize he was answering my question. “Then where do you live?”
A strange look crossed over his eyes. “Chicago, now.”
“Now?”
“We just moved back from Vegas.”
I blinked. He told me he was from Chicago, but I didn’t think he lived there anymore. It was a coincidence. Only, I didn’t know why my heart was suddenly pounding so fiercely in my chest.
I dug in my heels when he opened the front door to the luxurious hotel for me.
He frowned. “I don’t have time to prepare you, angel. I have to get upstairs.”
“I don’t have to come with you. I can catch a ride home.”
He shook his head. “No need. This meeting won’t be long, and I’ll drive you back, okay?”
I bit my bottom lip, indecision making me stutter. Silas took advantage of that and ushered me in.
I took in the opulent space before me. Everything was so…pretentious. It was the perfect representation of wealth, as I was sure those were the kind of people who could actually afford a night here.
Silas didn’t let me linger. We got to the elevator and pressed the button for the penthouse suite. Jesus, but just how much money did the brothers have?
I shook my head. I probably didn’t want to know the answer to that question.
“Okay?” Silas asked, eyeing me through the reflection of the elevator doors.
I nodded.
He still had his arm around me, and standing side by side in the mirror, the contrast between us was just so… noticeable.
I was of average height, but he made me look petite.
I turned my head away from our reflection and into his shirt. He had no boundaries for personal space, so I doubted he would mind me getting closer. And judging by the way his arm tightened around me, I’d say he didn’t.
“Do your brothers know you’re bringing me?”
“Nope,” he answered, making the ‘p’ pop in the word.
“And what do you think they’ll say to that?”
He shrugged. “Don’t care. All that matters is you’re here with me, got it?”
I didn’t answer him. Not for the first time, I wished I had fought harder to get home on my own. I didn’t belong in this hotel, and I certainly didn’t belong in this man’s arms.
Club life was rough, and it showed, from the weary lines on my face to my pale skin, lifeless hair, and tired body. I was everything that Silas was not. And I had never been so uncomfortable in my life.
I jumped when the doors opened with ading. Silas shot me a look that I ignored.
He grabbed hold of my hand and led me to the door of the suite.
We walked into bright light from the open window, showing an impressive view of the busy city.
“Finally. I don’t know how long I can hold off on the meeting with the Cadorna…” Maverick’s voice trailed off when he realized Silas wasn’t alone. He took me in, his eyes making a slow perusal up and down my body before they narrowed.
If Silas was big, Maverick was massive. I had almost forgotten just how massive, but now that I was standing in front of him, he looked at me like a bug he could easily squish. Iswallowed and took half a step back. Maverick noticed the move right away, and I froze.
