I pulled away from him. “You have to find her.”

“Baby, what if—”

I shook my head, interrupting him. “Please, Gabriel. You have to find her for me. I won’t… I can’t move on until I know what happened to her. What if I can still save her? Please?”

He didn’t say anything for a moment. I felt like my heart was going to rip its way out of my chest, through my skin and bones.

It was the longest moment of my life.

Then he gave me the slightest nod.

I didn’t react for one long second.

I took a deep breath, feeling the weight that had been pushed down on my chest all these years, finally lifting.

Marginally.

Then I lay my head back down on his chest, and I completely lost it.

GABRIEL

It was exactlyone fucking week after Bianca told me about her friend, and I was no closer to finding out what happened to the girl than I had been when I first heard about her.

Lucinda Lewis.

She was the same age as my wife, but the two couldn’t be more different, based on what I had skimmed on her old social media posts.

She went missing when she was young, and perhaps I was biased, but a part of me wondered what kind of hold this girl had on my wife to make her dedicate so many years of her life to finding her friend.

Most people would have seen this as the hopeless situation it really was.

What they could only do, what Bianca should have done, was accept it and move on.

But hell, if Lucinda never went missing, would I have Bianca by my side?

It was because of that night that Bianca was placed directly in my path.

I couldn’t be resentful about that.

But I also didn’t want to know about Lucinda.

I wouldn’t lie to my wife, not about shit like this. But I had a feeling whatever information I might find out about the girl would only break my wife’s heart.

Lucinda was like a fucking ghost after the night she disappeared, which was unusual since there was usually some trace left behind.

But with her… there was nothing.

It was as if she had never existed in the first place.

Not even a body to be found.

So what the hell had Luis been doing with the girl?
