“Okay,” I whispered, feeling anything but reassured.

After a few more logistical details, the call ended. As I hung up, the phone felt heavy in my hand. The weight of Michael’s words pressed down on me as I stared at the counter, unable to move.

My mind raced with every worst-case scenario.

Without a word, Liam stepped closer and pulled me into his arms. His warmth surrounded me.

I sank into him.

“We’re going to fight this,” he said firmly, his voice low and full of conviction. “Whatever it takes, Evie. You’re not in this by yourself.”

Tears pricked at my eyes, and I buried my face in his chest.

“What if I lose him, Liam? I can’t—”

“You won’t,” he interrupted gently but with an edge of steel. “I promise you, we’ll fight this. And we’ll win.”

His words were a lifeline, and though the fear didn’t vanish, it felt less suffocating with him beside me.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Evie

Standing there in Liam’s arms, felt like I could drift worlds away.

I couldn’t think straight. My heart was pounding, not from fear this time, but from something I didn’t entirely understand.

Liam’s words still echoed in my head—We’ll fight this. You’re not alone.

I tilted my head slightly, and his blue eyes locked onto mine.

How did he do that? How did he make everything feel like it might be okay, even when my world was crumbling?

My chest expanded as raw and unfamiliar emotion swept through me. I wasn’t used to this: leaning on someone or feeling like someone wanted to carry the weight with me.

Especially someone like Liam.

And undeniably gorgeous.

I couldn’t stop staring at him, the way his jaw tensed with determination, the way his lips softened when he looked at me like I was the only person in the world. The pull I felt toward him was magnetic, impossible to resist.

I didn’t know what was happening to me, but I wanted to let go for the first time in so long. To be swept away by him.

Standing in Liam’s arms, I felt like the ground beneath me had shifted in some irreversible way. The heaviness of the day, the fear scratching at the edges of my sanity, it all dimmed in his presence. He’d said I wasn’t alone, and I believed it for the first time in years.

I tipped my head back, searching his face for something I couldn’t name.

Strength?

Reassurance? It didn’t matter. All I saw was Liam—steady, solid, and achingly close.

“I want to kiss you.” The words spilled out before I could think of stopping them.

His eyes darkened with heat, and a spark of something undeniable flickered to life.

His grip on me tightened just slightly like he wasn’t sure if he was holding me in place or holding himself back.

“Evie...” His voice was low and rough, sending a shiver down my spine.
