At the far end of the chamber, a long chain lay curled up on the carpet like a poised snake with its hinge open. They chained their welcoming gift there. My stomach twisted at that revelation.
Eve watched me as I took it all in.
“Happy?” she snapped. “Now you’ve peeked behind the curtain.”
I gestured to the bottle of Bolly. “New member?”
“Dignitary.” She shook her head, seemingly annoyed with herself.
“What do they get after they sign?” I tilted my head toward the chain.
She slapped my hand. “Stop interrogating me.”
“Then stop being mysterious.”
“Remember who I am.”
“Oh, I remember.”
“You’re not even dressed properly.”
I showed a glimmer of amusement. “Since when is a bespoke tuxedo not proper?”
“Your mask.”
“I’m more interested in yours.” I stepped forward and eased her masquerade mask off her face.
“You can’t touch me.”
“I’m about to throw you over my shoulder and carry you out.”
“What is your problem?”
“Don’t you have a dream, Eve?” I said with compassion. “Every day you jeopardize it ever coming true.”
“You’re using me, that’s what this is. Manipulating me.”
“Why would I do that?”
“Because this place will change your life. Bring you more moneythan you’ve ever had. All your friends have money. You’re the only one who isn’t a millionaire.”
“I have money. It’s tied up in business.”
“You need me to make your takeover a reality,” she whispered. “I don’t have that kind of pull so you’re wasting your time.”
“Is that why you think I’m here?”
“You’re hungry for power. That’s what this place will bring you. Unmatched authority to influence world affairs without question.”
“Are you saying I’m corrupt?”
“Maybe.”
“Wait, what’s your husband’s profession again?”
“How dare you.”
“There she is,” I said, smirking. “The Eve I’ve come to…”
