I caught our reflection in one of the surrounding wall mirrors, surprised at how good we looked together.

Like a power couple.

We settled in a private booth and our waiter quickly brought us two glasses of sparkling water.

I ordered bourbon.

Lotte declined a beverage. “It’s a weekday,” she explained. “I’m driving precious cargo.”

“You certainly are,” I quipped. “How did you discover this place?”

I had decided to play along with her little game.

“A good friend was hired to decorate here.”

“They have great taste.” I accepted the menu from the waiter all the while watching his interaction with us.

He appeared reserved.

“What do you recommend?” I asked Lotte.

“Their Lobster Bisque is todiefor.”

Her expression immediately turned regretful and she reached out, resting her hand on my thigh as though to apologize for her thoughtless comment.

We locked gazes for a long moment.

The waiter set my bourbon before me, breaking the spell.

She whipped her hand away. “Order for me.”

“I’m not a Neanderthal.” I read the menu, pleasantly impressed.

“Convince me,” she chided.

I smiled at her. “Tell me more about you.”

“I’m just a dominatrix, Henry. Nothing more.”

“I’ll ask Shay to tell me all about you.” I took her napkin and laid it over her lap. “Anything you particularly like to eat?”

“I love everything they have here.”

A quick gesture to the waiter had him returning to our table. “We’ll begin with the mussels in white wine sauce, please, followed by Tarragon Chicken.”

The waiter nodded. “Good choice, sir.”

Lotte frowned. “That’s a lot of food.”

“What you don’t eat you can take home.”

“Is that you appealing to us working-class types?”

I reached for my tumbler of bourbon. “I respect the value of food.”

“I didn’t mean—”

“You see me as privileged.”
