But the chemistry between us was so intense.

I told myself our brief affair would end after this expedition. Peering up at Henry, I caught dark desire in his expression, contradicting my concerns.

“You okay?” he shouted over the rain.

“It’s cooling us down,” I yelled back.

He looked up and flinched, spotting something above us. Yanking the tarp off our heads, he grabbed my hand and pulled me off the trail.

I tried to see what was threatening us, but falling rain was soaking my face.

“What’s wrong?”

“A drone,” he said.

“What? Out here?”

Finally, he led me beneath a cluster of mangroves and we paused.

He caught his breath quickly. “Not sure if it saw us.”

“Someone is tracking us?” I was panting from the exertion.

“The question is who.”

“Reese?”

My clothes were soaked and sticking to my body, threatening to slow me down.

“If it is hers, and she failed to make contact,” he said, equally soaked, “I’ll be pissed.”

He studied the map on his watch, wiping rain droplets off it.

“We’ll cut through here. It’s dense but we’ll avoid being tracked. The drone won’t make it through the trees.”

Trying to hide my dread, I followed him through the dense forest, scouring the area for dangerous animals—or anything that might spring up and bite us.

I hated being engulfed by foliage.

“Are you sure this is the right way?” I called out.

He turned back at me. “Our next stop is less than a klick away.”

“What?

“We’re close.”

“What if the boat’s not there?”

“We continue on foot.”

The thought of seeing anything slithering or crawling close by freaked me out.

I tried to keep doubt and fear at bay.

Calm. Down.

This is good for me.
