“Sorry, man. Jasper’s been sighted. Come on downstairs.”
Shit.
“Yeah, yeah. Let me get dressed, and I’ll be right down.”
I close the door and hurry to get dressed as quietly as possible so I don’t wake Sasha. Unfortunately, I lose the grip on my boot when I swipe it off the floor, and it crashes into the nightstand, causing her to wake up.
“Sorry, little girl. Go back to sleep. I have to go handle some business downstairs.”
“What’s the matter?” she asks, rubbing sleep from her eyes.
“Someone spotted Jasper.”
I should have waited to tell her. I wouldn’t have kept it from her for long, but if there’s one thing that will keep her from falling back to sleep, it’s the thought of Jasper on the loose.
“What?Where? I’m coming downstairs with you.”
She hops out of bed, and I throw her my shirt. Without hesitation, she pulls it over her head before grabbing her shorts off of the ground. That’s when it hits me.
“Hey,” I gently place my finger under her chin so she’s looking at me.
“Were you wearing underwear earlier? Or did I just miss them in the heat of the moment.”
Smiling, she pulls a wad of fabric from the pocket of her shorts.
“I took them off earlier, but Maggie was in here getting dressed, so I couldn’t come put them in the hamper. I didn’t know what to do with them, so I just put them in my pocket,” she shrugs.
Pulling her close to me, I raise her lips to mine.
“Ilovethe idea of you in no panties.”
I plant a quick but deep kiss on her soft lips before grabbing a new t-shirt from my drawer and throwing it over my head. As soon as her shorts are buttoned, we leave my room and meet up with everyone downstairs.
When we get there, we find the music has been turned off, and everyone who isn’t a member of the club has gone. I lead Sasha over to the living room, and she takes a seat on the arm of the sofa next to where I’m sitting.
Stone looks from her to me briefly. He’s pissed I brought here in on this, but I don’t care. This concerns her, and she has every right to know what’s going on.
“We got a call from Pretty Boy a few minutes ago. He and one of the Bastards were staking out Doobs’s house tonight, and they heard gunshots. Then, they saw Jasper and another guy running down the front steps of the house and jumping into that red, eighties’ style Lincoln that was in front of his house the other day.
I hear the sharp intake of breath come from Sasha, and I cover her hand with mine.
“They’re following the car at a distance to see where it ends up, and he’ll call back with any new information as soon as possible. Last we heard, the car was headed east on Route 30, back this way. We need to be on our toes. The moment he crosses over into Gettysburg, Royce’s crew will pick him up and give us a call. But if they fail, or if Jasper heads elsewhere… Well, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to call for lockdown.”
“What does that mean?” Sasha asks.
I squeeze her hand gently, and she shoots me an annoyed look.
“We all come here and basically lock everyone in until the current threat has been diffused.”
Her eyes widen, and she looks like she’s about to ask a lot more questions. Questions that I have every intention of answering, but they will have to wait.
“Hey,” pulling her hand to my lips, I kiss the back of it. “Why don’t you go keep Maggie company. I’ll come fill you in soon. Promise.”
With a deep breath and an eye-roll, she stands and walks into the room that Maggie has inhabited over the past week and a half. She’s not going to be happy, but Iwilltell her what’s going on as soon as I know something.
“We’re close,” Stone adds once Sasha’s form disappears behind the door. “I can feel it. We’re going to get this asshole.”
I pinch the bridge of my nose, wishing that tonight was my night to take watch. I want at him so bad I can taste it. We can’t lose him, we may not get another shot.
