“Welcome home. How did everything go?” he asks.

“Fine, I’ll bring you up to speed in a minute. Where is Sasha? She’s not in her room.”

“She’s with Maggie,” he explains as he passes me.

I follow him to the door to Maggie’s room, and my eyes lock onto Sasha’s as soon as he opens the door. When she sees me, she starts to stand up, but I don’t want her to overdo it.

“No, no,” I command. “Stay seated.”

She lowers her body into the chair again, and I lean over, planting a kiss on the top of her head. She reaches up and palms my cheek, bringing me closer to her. The moment her lips hit mine, everything feels right with the world again.

Walking around her chair, I crouch down in front of her and rest my hand on her knee.

“How are you feeling?” I inquire.

She looks between Maggie and Hawk uncomfortably, and I realize she doesn’t want to talk in front of them.

“We’ll talk later,” I whisper, shooting her a wink.

“I spoke to your father a little earlier today,” Hawk explains to Maggie who has a look of terror on her face.

What the hell is that about?

“Don’t worry, I only told him you were showing signs of improvement, but that you’re still sleeping.”

Maggie visibly relaxes, and I make a mental note to ask Hawk what the hell is going on. If The Judge finds out we’re not being truthful, he could withhold information about Jasper from us, completely fucking up my plans.

“I have to give him regular updates if you want me to keep him at bay. The moment I stop checking in is the moment he comes looking for you.”

I watch as Sasha looks at Maggie with concern on her face.

“Hey, I have a question for you,” I tell Sasha. “Mind if we go back to your room for a bit?”

She looks from Maggie, to me, then back again. “Are you going to be okay?”

“Yeah. Yeah, I’ll be fine.” I don’t miss the way her eyes shoot to Hawk then back to Sasha quickly.

Sasha stands and walks around the back of her chair toward the door to her room. With a flick of her fingers, she unlocks the door.

“I’ll just leave this unlocked so it’s easier to get back in here later.”

The way Sasha looks between Maggie and Hawk has me thinking that something happened while I was gone. I keep my suspicions quiet until we’re in Sasha’s room and behind closed doors.

“What was that about?” I ask her.

“Oh, nothing really. Earlier this morning, I heard Maggie screaming. When I opened the door, I saw Kid holding her down and Hawk injecting something into her IV. I yelled for them to stop. I even jumped on Kid’s back—”

I shoot her a look, letting her know I’m not happy to hear that she was overdoing it, but she continues with her story.

“Anyway, Kid brought me back in here, and they locked that door so I couldn’t get in anymore. Nothing more than that happened. I talked to Hawk right after, and he explained that Maggie was having a night terror, so he was giving her a mild sedative to help her calm down. Everything was fine after that. I’ve been in her room ever since.”

“Are you okay?” I ask, my face softening slightly.

Sasha looks at her fingers before turning and climbing back up into her bed. With her legs dangling over the side, she finally answers me.

“Physically? I’m mostly okay. I’m still sore in several places, and Hawk said it will be at least two weeks until I’m able to go back to work.”

“Ifyou go back to work,” I interject.
