My Adrienne,
I saw you outside of our apartment today. You were walking on the sidewalk on the other side of the street. Your hair was the same as it’s always been, slight brown waves hanging down to the middle of your back. You were in that puffy, thigh-length black coat that I always hated, but you didn’t care because it was the warmest thing you’ve ever worn.
I crossed the street to try and catch you, but it was so crowded I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to get to you in time. I prayed that you had to stop at one of the stores along the way so I would have a chance to catch up to you. Suddenly, you ducked around the corner and out of sight. My heart dropped. I was never going to be able to make it through the crowd and find you before you vanished.
I kept shouting at people to move out of the way. I needed to get to you! Why didn’t they understand? I pushed through and finally made it around the corner. I managed to locate you up ahead and I ran to you. I placed my arm on your shoulder and turned you around so you were facing me.
But this woman didn’t have your slender nose and rosy cheeks. This woman didn’t have your willow green eyes.
This woman didn’t have my heart.
It wasn’t you…just when I thought my heart couldn’t hurt anymore…
With Love,
Your Marshall
