“Maybe.” Tito laughed, and gave him a loud high five.
“What. Happened?” I shouted. I had no idea what was going on.
Slash looked down at me, gently tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. “Tito frisbeed the drone.”
“What?” I stared at him incredulously and he nodded. “Tito took out a drone with a Frisbee?”
“Yah, with a Frisbee,” Tito said. “It’s my favorite sport, besides football. And by football, I mean the European kind. Anyway, I was lucky because the drone gave me a chance to hit it when it paused. It’s a lot easier to hit a stationary target, and well, I’m a pretty good shot, even with a Frisbee.”
I turned around spotting Elvis, Xavier, and Basia huddled in a tight embrace. Seconds later, Gwen raced past me and threw herself into the group hug with the others. I could hear someone sobbing. Tears sprang to my eyes as the vise around my heart lessened a bit.
“Boy, are we glad for your accuracy, Tito,” Xavier said, lifting his head from the group embrace. He still had one arm around Basia and the other around Elvis’s shoulders. Elvis held hands with Gwen and still looked a little shaky on his feet.
“Yes, thank you,” Basia echoed. “You saved our lives.”
I went to Basia and threw my arms around her. She hugged me back tightly. “It’s okay. We’re okay, Lexi.”
“That was way too close for me,” I said.
“Me, too.”
Our driver, the Secret Service agent, strode over, still carrying his ray gun. “Apparently, the Secret Service is going to have to add Frisbees to our arsenal. They seem to be very effective against drones. But as much as I’d like to stand around talking about unusual attack strategies, we need to get you guys out of here right now. Hate to say it, but we’ll have to question you again.”
As the shock of the whole event began to abate, I looked around. There were still crowds of people watching, shouting, and filming. The police had arrived and were trying to gain control of the crowds. This area was going to be a crime scene for a while, and knowing DC, the local traffic was going to be a mess. The agents herded the rest of our guests and families back into the SUVs as quickly as they could. The white truck Elvis and I had been hiding behind was long gone, as were several other cars that had been parked or stopped in the street. Wisely, they’d realized they were much too close to the action.
Tito and Slash went to speak to an agent who’d waved them over, so Elvis fell into step with me, still holding Gwen’s hand.
“Let’s not do that again,” Elvis suggested. “Ever.”
“I’m with you on that one hundred percent,” I said.
Elvis abruptly stopped, spotting something at his feet. He bent over and picked up a piece of plastic or metal debris from the street. After he gave it a quick examination, he put it in his pocket. Curious, I started to ask him what he’d found when I was circled from behind by strong arms. Someone lifted me off my feet.
“Please, Keys, tell me this isn’t the usual wedding drama that gives all brides nightmares. Because if it is, I’m never going to ask Gray to marry me.”
Hands, being the jokester as usual. “Trust me, Hands, I don’t think there’s a bride anywhere who’s had these kinds of wedding nightmares.”
“That’s because you’re special.”
“Or cursed,” I countered.
“Won’t argue with you on that one.”
Hands, Elvis, and Gwen broke off to go back to their SUVs, so I climbed into our car. Diego already sat in front, staring straight ahead, not saying a word. He was probably in shock, poor guy. I had a feeling he might not ever cater another rehearsal dinner after this.
Slash jumped into the car and closed the door. “We’re good to go,” he said, tapping the back of the agent’s seat.
The car moved forward, and Slash reached over to take my hand. “I don’t know about you, but I’m getting really tired of being a target.”
“Me, too. We were lucky again.”
“I know. This has to stop before our luck or skill runs out. The worst part is that we don’t even knowwhysomeone is trying to kill us.”
A thoughtful expression crossed his face. “I don’t think they’re trying to kill me, because that drone could have easily blown me to pieces.”
“Jeez, Slash.” My stomach flipped. “Can you not say things like that?”
“I’m sorry,cara. But it’s true.”
