Oh, Rhys knew that was why he’d asked me to run up to the roof, toavoidwhoever Dan had assigned.

“Dan should know that there aren’t any current threats and I am more than capable of protecting her,” Rhys growled, his eyes turning into his dragon’s eyes for the briefest of moments.

I didn’t point out that I was also capable of protecting myself and that I’d proven that during the big dhampir vampire war.

“He doesn’t seem to think that’s the case,” Thor said and met Rhys’s gaze. “You’ll have to bring that up with him, though.”

It worried me that my werewolf father-in-law might know of a threat that we didn’t, but I didn’t let that worry show. “We’ll talk to him when we pick up Caleb,” I assured Rhys.

He growled softly and I could see his hand twitch, likely wanting to reach for his phone to text.

“No phones,” I ordered with a growl and narrowed my eyes at him.

He smiled. “Your growl has improved a lot since you had Caleb.”

“I have to growl a lot with our rambunctious son,” I reminded him and drank the rest of my mimosa. Caleb was a combination of all five of us: siren, werewolf, dragon, mage, and elf. The older he got, the more powers and craziness he gained. It was hard enough dealing with a toddler, but when he could shift into a fox and slink out of the house, or shift into a wolf and run for miles without being winded, it was exhausting.

Michelle walked over and set my new glass down before taking the now empty one. “Your breakfast will be out shortly.”

“Can I get steak and eggs?” Thor asked with a smile.

Michelle nodded and hurried back to the kitchen.

“How’s Leona?” I asked.

Thor growled softly and looked at his lap. “Good.”

That growl told another story, but I didn’t press.

“Don’t you two have plans today?” Rhys asked.

“Yes. We’re going shopping,” I answered.

Thor grumbled beneath his breath, likely because with him being on guard duty today, that meant he would have to go with me and Leona.

My best friend was temperamental and she and Thor fought a lot. Their fights didn’t last long though, and Leona swore the best part was their make-up time. I often wondered if Thor just wasn’t fully prepared to be part of a non-monogamous relationship, but loved Leona too much to give her up.

“She bringing anyone else?” Thor asked.

I shrugged and sipped from my glass. “No idea.”

Michelle set our food down and we ate in silence, all enjoying the delicious food.

Once done, Rhys paid the bill, leaving a large tip, and we headed outside.

“Do you want me to ask Dan to find a replacement?” I asked Thor.

He growled again. “No, it’s fine. This is my job.” He angrily pulled out his hair tie and shook out his hair.

“You’re awfully grumpy. I don’t know if you’ll be able to focus well enough to adequately protect Jolie,” Rhys commented.

Thor looked at Rhys, puffed up his chest, and narrowed his eyes. “I take my job seriously, sir, and I won’t let anything happen to my friend.”

“Where are you off to now?” Rhys asked me.

“Well, since you woke me up so early, I have time to run home before my shopping trip with Leona,” I answered. “I can shower and change since I ran out of the house right after getting your text.”

With a grouchy Thor at my side, we returned to the house so I could shower and change. His grouchiness was sidetracked when he spotted Foxfire slumped over a cup of coffee at the kitchen bar.
