Trig nods his head, looking pissed, looking uneasy.
I look back at Miles, “I said it makes you look bad,” he repeats. Sweep leans against the counter with his ankles crossed, looking unenthused as usual.
“I’m sorry, Bones. I’ll do better. I got a little bit of money in the office. I can give you that now and give you the other next week.” Miles looks back at Trig again. “Why…why is he popping that rubber band?”
“Therapy,” Trig says.
“Keeps him from shooting people in the face,” Sweep says evenly.
I exhale, grabbing my knife from my waist to cut the zip tie.“Go get the money.”
Miles only gave me half, which didn’t please me. I’ll be back next week to collect the rest, and if he doesn’t have it for me, he’ll lose a finger.
I didn’t want to deal with this shit today. I wanted business to go smoothly so I could get back home and help Bexley with the funeral arrangements. I wanted to be there for her. I know she’s still at the bar because I’ve got men watching it.
Mae texted me earlier and let me know Bex was up. She also told me she gave her some spiked coffee. Said she didn’t look well and didn’t seem happy at all that she was stuck there all day.
But it is what it is. All I care about is her safety right now and I couldn’t stay with her all day. I have a job to do and I need to talk to Moretti.
I look down at the note in my hand.
An eye for an eye.
I’ll take everything you love first.
And then I’m coming for you.
“Who the fuck is this, anyway? I ask.
“Seems like someone’s after you,” Trig says from the back.
“Well, if that ain’t obvious as fuck,” I say, tossing the note onto the dash.
“What did you do, Bones?” Trig says.
“If I knew, do you think I would be questioning what this is? What the hell’s wrong with you lately?” I look back at him.
He shrugs. “Just tired. Stayed up too late with a girl.”
“You need to leave those whores at the clubhouse alone. Thought you would have learned your lesson when you were dealing with that stalker bitch before Mickey got killed.”
“Yeah, well, I guess I didn’t.” He starts popping his rubber band. I look over at Sweep questionably.
He shakes his head, like he has no idea what’s up with this crazy fuck either. I ignore it. I’ve got too much on my mind. I need to know who the hell killed my little brother. I need to know why they went to Bexley’s work. They were clearly after her to hurt me.
But who all knows about our past? Could Moretti have done this? Is he trying to get rid of me?
But that doesn’t make sense. How have I taken anything from Moretti? If anything, I’ve handed him the fucking world without him having to lift so much as a finger. But he did warn me to stay away from her. Maybe he knew I was keeping an eye on her, and maybe he thought it was distracting me.
I’m going in circles here.
I’ve got to figure out what Moretti and Nugget are doing. I need to dig into that more. Once I find out who did this, though, I swear they’ll suffer. They think I’ve taken everything from them…just fucking wait.
______________
“What the hell happened to you?” Moretti asks as we walk into his office.
“I hit something,” I say. “Get me a towel,” I say to Nugget who stands at the door.
