Mel’s foot jiggled as the car rose quickly. She wasn’t sure how Zoe would react. She’s always thought that Dev was bad for her. That he’d disappoint her. Fail her.

And she’d been right. Devhadfailed her.

But that was in the past.

She’d waited until she was certain they were solid. Now she needed to return Zoe’s check to her.

When the door opened, Zoe was waiting. Grabbing her by the hands, Zoe dragged her into her arms and hugged her tightly. “Mel! Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”

“I wanted to surprise you,” she said, smiling. “And it looks like I have.” She looked around. “Spence isn’t here?”

Zoe shook her head. “He’s on a job with Nico. They’re tag-teaming an asshole who’s harassing a woman. The guy works with her and can’t take no for an answer. They’re protecting her, but they want to make a solid case against the guy. Photos, videos, recordings. They’ll hand it over to the Seattle PD in a week or so, tied up in a bow.”

“Too bad. I was looking forward to seeing Spence. How are you guys doing?”

Zoe glowed. “We’re great. Couldn’t be better.” Her smile widened. “We’re talking about having a baby.” She nudged Mel. “Auntie Mel.”

“That’s great news, Zo.” Mel threw her arms around her sister and hugged her tightly. “I’m excited for you. Can’t wait to be an aunt.”

Drawing away, Mel opened her bag and took out the envelope that held the check Zoe had given her. “This is for you.”

Frowning, Zoe opened the envelope and pulled out the check. Stared at it for a moment, then looked up at Mel. “You’re not repaying me. This is a check you wrote to Dev.”

“That’s why you’re such a successful businesswoman,” Mel said with a grin. “Nothing gets past you.”

Zoe Frowned. “Does this mean you didn’t buy Dev out?”

“That’s exactly what it means. I gave it to him. Told him it was over. Then we had one last job to do together.”

“And?” Zoe said.

“And we decided we didn’t want to break up the company. Or our partnership.”

Zoe scowled at her. “He was an asshole to you,” she said.

“He was. But he figured some stuff out, including that he loved me.” She shrugged. “I’ve always loved him. He finally caught up to me.”

“Are you happy?” Zoe asked.

“Deliriously,” she said immediately.

“And he’s good to you?”

“He is. I’ve never been happier. I’m pretty sure he feels the same way.”

“Then why the hell didn’t he come with you?”

“He did,” Mel said.” She swallowed but held her sister’s gaze. “He’s getting coffee. To brace himself to face you.”

“Really? He’s scared of me?” A tiny smile twitched her lips.

“Not exactly scared. But you’re my sister. He’s afraid grudge-holding runs in the Melbourne family.”

“Give him a call and tell him to come up.”

Zoe’s eyes sparkled, and Mel’s stomach churned. But she pulled out her phone and hit Dev’s name. He picked up immediately.

“Come on up,” she said. “The doorman will open the elevator.”
