He put the truck into gear and pulled out onto the highway again.
And maybe, at the same time, he could stop Stephanie from making the worst decision of her life. Because legal or not, marrying Dax would be a terrible thing and she deserved so much more. Especially now that he knew the truth.
ChapterNineteen
He was too late.
The wedding ceremony had already started by the time Logan pulled up in the yard. But that didn’t mean he wasn’t going to try to do what he could. He drove as close as he could get and then ran the rest of the way through the trees to the site they used for ceremonies. It was a beautiful spot by the river, and although it wasn’t his favorite spot, it really was gorgeous.
Thankfully, there were only a handful of people in the clearing. The officiant, Dee, stood under the arch with Stephanie and Dax in front of her. He couldn’t see Stephanie’s face as she stared straight forward. Dax, on the other hand, looked around, smiling a huge toothy grin in every direction the photographer moved. Clearly, it was all just a big photo shoot for him.Publicity. That’s all it was.
Seeing it made Logan even angrier.
He forced himself to look to Hope, who sat in a wheelchair, a small smile on her face while Levi stood behind her. Across from them was Faith. She looked gorgeous. And sad.Reallysad.
Was it because of him? Or maybe it was because she was watching Stephanie make a mistake? Did she believe him about Dax after all?Yes.Logan could tell by the press of her lips and the way she looked at the movie star, slightly on guard, suspicious, and tense all through her spine, that she did. Faith was never very good at hiding how she felt.
It was one of the things he loved about her.
Loved.
Yes.Loved.
He stood there for a moment, lost in the idea that yes, he loved Faith. He’d always loved her. It was more than justfeelings. It was more than lust. It was definitely love. A year ago—hell, a month ago—if someone would have told him he’d be madly in love with the woman and not even remotely scared by the prospect of it, he would have laughed and run in the opposite direction.
But now, all he wanted to do was move toward her.
At the front of the clearing, Dee had obviously said something important, because everyone shifted and Steph and Dax turned a little to face each other.
Shit.
The wedding. The wedding he couldn’t in good conscience let happen.
Dax took Stephanie’s hand, and even from the distance he was at, Logan could see the smirk on his face. How could Stephanie not see it? How could she settle for anything that wasn’t everything?
“No!” he yelled before he could stop himself. “Don’t do it.”
Everyone spun around. As he ran toward the couple, Logan had the thought that maybe there might have been a better way to do what he was about to do, but it was too late. He was committed.
“Stop!” He pushed himself directly between the bride and groom-to-be. “Don’t do it, Steph.”
Faith grabbed his arm and yanked him back toward her. “What are you doing?” she hissed in his ear. “Stop this.”
“No.” He looked her in the eyes and tried to wordlessly apologize for what he was about to do. “I’m sorry, Faith. I can’t not say something.”
Before she could object again, he turned to Stephanie, who looked absolutely stunning despite the daggers she was shooting from her eyes in his direction. “Steph, I’m so sorry to do this to you. I know how excited you were for this day and—”
“Logan.” Levi appeared at his side and tried to put a hand on his shoulder, but Logan shrugged him off.
“He’s not the man for you, Steph. You deserve much more than this. And I know I’m probably—”
“Are you seriously trying to pick up my fiancée right now?” Dax spun him around and confronted him.
Instead of being filled with rage the way Logan would have expected, Dax actually look pleased. His lips were flicked up in what could only be described as a smirk and his eyes twinkled. No doubt he was busy thinking about the great story that would come from Logan’s outburst.
Especially if he was trying to twist it.
“No.” Logan shook his head. “I’m not trying to pick up your fiancée.” He turned to the woman who’d become his friend over the last little while, and his heart broke at the look on her pretty face. “I’m so sorry, Steph.” He took her hand. “I really am. But you only deserve the best. You deserve to have a man who absolutely adores you and would move heaven and earth for you. You deserve a man like—”
