“I won’t change my mind,” Faith said with certainty. “I made you a promise, and I’ll keep it. But it doesn’t mean I’m not scared shitless.”
Hope laughed and sat next to her at the table. “You know I’m only a phone call away. Besides, Logan agreed to help out as much as he possibly can.”
That was a whole different problem. Faith shook her head. Logan was nothing but trouble, as far as she was concerned. He always had been. He was a partier and a troublemaker. They’d always rubbed each other the wrong way, and Faith couldn’t see why it would be any different to work with him now than it was when they were younger.
Nothing had changed.
Especially the slightest bit of sexual tension between them.
She shook her head in an effort to clear it. That was the real problem. Despite the fact that she found Logan Langdon incredibly annoying and a giant pain in her ass, she couldn’t help the intense feelings of desire that he sparked in her. And those feelings definitely hadn’t lessened over the years.
“I don’t know if working with Logan is a good idea,” Faith admitted. “I think I might be better off on my own, to be honest. I don’t really need—”
“Do you remember when you were telling me how badly I needed help?”
She nodded. Of course she remembered.
“If I needed help, you absolutely will, Faith. And that’s okay. It’s a big job. Too much for one person, but I know you’re up to the challenge.”
Faith laughed. “I’m glad you have confidence in me.”
“Are you kidding me? Of course I do. Not only are you a kick-ass paralegal, you’re my sister and you can do anything. Even weddings.”
“Even weddings,” she repeated. “I mean, I better be good at weddings, because I guess I’m not a paralegal anymore.”
The day before, Faith had called and put in her official notice at the firm. Like a coward, she’d called human resources to tell them the news first. Judging by the amount of voicemails and texts on her phone in the last twenty-four hours, the secret was out and Noah had heard the news, too. She’d tried to tell herself that she’d done the right thing, that they were never supposed to be anything serious, and that she didn’t owe him anything. But despite every single thing she told herself, she couldn’t bring herself to actually believe it.
“About that,” Hope said. “How do you feel about it all?”
“About leaving the firm?”
“No,” Hope said with a small smile. “About leaving the guy.”
The guy.
They’d never actually talked about Noah, but that didn’t mean that her sister didn’t know something was up. Say what you want about twin intuition, but it was a very real thing. Hope knew her better than anyone. Maybe even herself some days.
Faith dropped her gaze to the table and answered honestly. “I don’t know.” She shook her head. “I miss him, but at the same time, it wasn’t anything serious.”
“So you keep saying.” Hope reached over and put her hand over Faith’s. “It’s okay to have feelings about this, you know.”
She looked at her sister. Was that really true? Was it okay to have feelings about it when she was the one who’d insisted on keeping feelings out of it in the first place? And was she really even having feelings about it at all, or was she just stressed and overwhelmed about the changes that were going on? After all, packing up and moving back to her hometown to run a business she didn’t fully believe in because your twin sister, and only living family member, had cancer and instead of seeking immediate treatment was going traveling around the world while trying to have a baby was a lot to take in. Thatwasa lot. Which was probably what was really going on. It wasn’t that she missed Noah, or hadfeelingsfor him or the fact that she was officially breaking off whatever it was that they had when they weren’t supposed to have anything at all.
She was overwhelmed. That was all.
Faith shook her head and forced a smile. “I’m fine. And this whole situation is fine.”
Hope laughed. “Is it?”
“No!” Faith laughed too. “It’s not fine at all. But it will be. Because the most important thing is thatyouwill be fine. Now, don’t you have some packing to do or something?”
Levi
“She doesn’t want me here.” Logan grunted as he stacked the chairs while Levi looked on.
He’d been watching his cousin work for the last twenty minutes, and in that time Logan hadn’t stopped talking about Faith. It would be funny if Levi wasn’t actually concerned about the state of his new wife’s business while they went on their trip. Deep down, he was sure it would be fine. Well, mostly sure, but he still had his doubts about Faith running things, especially with Logan as hergeneral labor. The two of them could barely exist in the same room without throwing barbs at each other; what were the odds that they’d be able to get through an entire wedding without breaking into a fight that guaranteed the bride and groom remembered their special day for entirely the wrong reasons?
Levi certainly wasn’t putting money on it.
