In the room, I noticed the bloodstain on my sheets, further proving what Raffe had claimed. My cheeks warmed at the memory, and I dressed in a sweater and jeans then changed my sheets.
The spot in my chest boiled hot with anger. I grabbed my phone from the nightstand and checked for Raffe’s text, worry weighing on me.
Something was wrong.
I’d missed three messages, but one was from Slade and two were from Hecate. It was almost eight, and I was supposed to have met them five and a half hours ago.
Slade: Hey, are we still meeting at the student center? Sorry, I got tied up, but I’m on my way.
Thirty minutes later, I received a second message.
Hecate: Where are you? Slade and I are worried.
Shit. I’d forgotten that I’d told them I’d meet them there. I’d seen Josie leaving the men’s apartments, and my blood had gone crazy.
Hecate: You aren’t answering your door. Please respond.
I was a huge ass. I sent a message to both Slade and Hecate.
Me: I’m so sorry. My blood went crazy, and I passed out. Josie and Raffe helped me, and I’m just now functioning. I didn’t mean to worry you.
Within seconds, my phone buzzed.
Slade: Thank goddess you’re okay. We were gathering a search party for you. Did Raffe hurt you?
Of course Slade would think the worst of him.
Me: No, he didn’t. I’m about to meet him in the woods, so can we meet in the morning?
I hated to brush them off, but I didn’t want to spend another minute away from Raffe, and I hadn’t heard from him. The spot in my chest got even hotter.
Things with Keith must not be going well. I needed to get to Raffe before he did something he regretted. Not waiting for a response, I shut my door and rushed outside.
Within seconds, I was heading in the direction of my meltdown. If they were near the spot where I’d almost imploded, then they weren’t far inside the woods, and I would be fine. If something happened, Raffe would hear me.
I passed through the tree line. “Raffe?” I called out, wanting him to know I was coming. I didn’t want to surprise them, though I doubted I could.
Silence was all that responded. I hadn’t gone far in the woods, so they should be within range to hear me.
A tingle sprouted on my neck, but it wasn’t the same sensation as when Raffe watched me.
Holy shit.
Please don’t let it be a vampire.
My blood jolted as I glanced over my shoulder.
Somethingwaswrong.
I needed to get the hell out of here.
“Raffe!” I shouted, needing him more than ever.
I heard a pop, like a rifle, and something stabbed me in the neck. A sharp, burning sensation overwhelmed me, and I grabbed on to something cold and cylindrical. As my vision grew fuzzy, I yanked it out and looked at what had to be a tranquilizer dart.
What thehell?
“Raffe!” I screamed, or I tried to, but my body felt like lead. I tried to head back out of the tree line, but Dave appeared, blocking my path.
