Some of the guilt eased, and I opened the front door.

“Oh, and Sky,” Lucy called out.

I paused and glanced at her. “Yeah?”

“I’m sorry too.” She rolled her shoulders.

I wasn’t sure what she was apologizing for, but I needed to leave before she tried to come with me. “You haven’t done anything to apologize for.” I stepped out the door. “See you soon.” And I left.

Outside, the cool air invigorated me. Once I got some coffee, I should feel more normal.

Then I noticed Josie leaving the men’s apartment building with Raffe’s jersey in her hand.

Though it should’ve been impossible after last night, my blood didn’t even fizz—it hummed immediately, and the pain of heartache and loss burned inside me. I truly felt like I was dying.

This was it.

The moment I imploded.

The moment I died.

CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

Itook off for the woods as fast as I could. I stumbled, and my knees hit the ground. The impact jarred me, and my blood hummed so hard that my body shook.

If I was going to die, I wouldn’t do it publicly and out the supernaturals. The last thing I wanted to do was create any hardship for anyone.

Gritting my teeth, I stood.

“Skylar, wait!” Josie called from behind me.

My blood surged and became more volatile. It wasn’t her fault; it was the situation, and I didn’t want to risk harming her. “Stay back,” I gritted out while attempting to run toward the woods.

The ground started to shake, and I wasn’t sure if it was from my power, my lack of balance, or a combination of the two. I had to move faster, but no matter what I did, I kept stumbling over my damn feet, which had turned into lead.

Suddenly, an arm wrapped around my waist, and someone helped me stand upright.

Josie.

With her help, I was able to move faster, especially since she was pushing me toward the woods while helping me keep my balance.

“Are you causing the ground to shake?” she asked when we neared the tree line.

I needed to get deep into the woods.

“Yes, and that’s why you need togo.” I didn’t want to hurt her. That would destroy Raffe. He loved her in a way I wished he cared about me. I could read her emotions so clearly, though. She was determined to help me. “If you stay, you will get hurt.”

We reached the tree line, and the ground cracked under my feet.

“If I left you, Raffe would never forgive me,” Josie rasped. “So how do we get it to stop?”

I stumbled deeper into the woods and dropped to my hands and knees. I slid my hands through the cool mulch and tried to focus on the earth, but my heartbreak kept my emotions too volatile to calm down.

There was no way I would get over it, not when Josie and Raffe had picked up where they’d left off. Maybe it was an act, but it wouldn’t be forever. Those two made sense in a way Raffe and I never would.

“Skylar,” Josie said louder and rubbed my back, bringing me out of my thoughts.

“I … I don’t know.” I focused on the mulch and hoped some animals would come, but at the same time, I hoped that they wouldn’t. Nothing else needed to get hurt, and I feared I was past the point of no return. “You need to go. Please!”
