“No, thank you, really. I just think it’s funny that you’re talking to her like she can understand you.” I lifted my head, but the room spun harder, so I lay back down.

“Hold on, let me go grab you something to eat.” She disappeared, and I heard her rummaging around in the kitchen.

I had to get out of bed. She couldn’t enter the room with Keith protecting me so vigilantly. Slowly, I braced myself on the wall and stood then shuffled to the door. I sidestepped the cat’s food and made it into the living room.

Lucy turned around, holding a paper plate with a slice of pizza on it. She put it on the couch cushion because we never replaced the coffee table I’d destroyed, and hurried over to help me sit down.

I was certain I was going to vomit.

Somehow, I made it to the chair, and she handed me the pizza, which I devoured. After several bites, I began to feel better, like I had last time.

“Slade refused to talk to me, but it was obvious. Did you have another meltdown last night?” She tilted her head.

I laughed. If she only knew this wasn’t the only time since Raffe and I ended things. Instead, I shrugged. “I’m fine. That’s all that matters.”

“Maybe you should talk to Raf—”

“Please don’t finish that sentence.” I was having a hard enough time not texting, calling, or rubbing my body all over him. The last thing I needed was encouragement to do any of those things. “The coven is helping me.”

“Are you sure that’s what they’re doing?”

I didn’t want to have this conversation. “Yeah. Their magic is similar to mine.” I shrugged, not wanting to tell her about theBook of Twilight. I was thankful Raffe hadn’t ratted out thatsecret, though I wondered why. Maybe he’d forgotten, though I doubted it.

At the thought of him, pain blasted throughout my body, just as I’d feared. My blood surged like it wanted to jolt, but it couldn’t—the one benefit of having a meltdown.

She pursed her lips. “That doesn’t mean they’re helping.”

The walls started to close in on me. I had to get out of here and away from her probing questions. Maybe Lucy coming back wasn’t a good thing after all. “They’re all I’ve got.” I sighed and stood. “I’m going to grab my phone and run down to the student center for a coffee.”

“I can go with you.” Lucy stood.

Having her with me would be problematic. I wanted to learn if Slade and Priestess Olwyn had discovered anything that could help me. “I’m going to see if Slade can meet me. I need to talk to him.”

She frowned. “He’s probably busy.”

I lifted a brow. That was an odd thing for her to say, especially since she didn’t know him or his habits. “I’ll find out.”

As I went to my room, I could feel her gaze on me.

I slipped inside and found Keith eating the food. I smiled and grabbed my phone. “I’ll be right back,” I told her, doing what I’d made fun of Lucy for doing. That was karma for me.

I looked at the time and realized it was two in the afternoon. The coffee shop would be closing in thirty minutes. I had to hurry, so I shot a message to Slade and Hecate.

Me: I’m going to get a coffee. Anyone around?

As usual, Slade responded within seconds.

Slade:I’m held up, will be there soon.

A few seconds later, another text came through.

Hecate: On my way. See you there:/

One of them was all I needed in case I got in trouble. I shut the door behind me and headed to the front door. Lucy watched me with a deep frown.

I wanted to kick myself. She was back, and I was putting distance between us. “Hey, I’m really sorry about last night. I’ll be back in an hour or so, and maybe we can actually watch our show for the rest of the day and order takeout?”

She smiled. “That sounds great.”
