Yes. We’ll stay here until you arrive.
Let us know if anything happens.I stared at the tan ceiling, wishing we were closer than we were. I was so damn close to getting answers that I wanted to cry. However, if Zeke truly thought she was at risk, then taking her had been the right thing to do. He should’ve just let us know so we could’ve driven straight there.
Bodey added,I don’t care what it is—if something seems even slightly wrong, you let us know immediately. I don’t care if it’s that Sybil farted weird and could be getting sick.
I arched a brow. “That was a Jack-type comment.”
Bodey exhaled and hung his head. “We need to figure this out and eliminate the threat so his sorry ass can go home.”
Laughter bubbled out, and I relished the moment of normalcy. “It has nothing to do with spending quality time with me?”
“Fuck yeah. Getting rid of Jack is just a bonus.” He winked.
“Maybe I shouldn’t have come back from college,” Jasmine grumbled. “All I do here is listen to my brother flirt, smell his arousal, and watch him eye-fuck his mate every few minutes.”
“You’ve been home for only twenty hours,” Samuel retorted. “You can’t complain until you’ve been around them as long as I have.”
I turned around and stuck my tongue out at them. “I can’t help it that we’re happy we found one another. Besides, if it weren’t for Bodey, wewouldn’t have found each other.” I pointed my finger at Samuel and then myself.
Samuel chuckled. “That’s true.”
What would’ve happened if they hadn’t stumbled upon me that night I was attacked in Hells Canyon? Would I even be alive? Would Samuel be king right now?
Let’s inform the others what’s going on,Bodey linked, tightening his grip on my hand. He must have realized that my thoughts had taken a dark turn.
What-ifs wouldn’t accomplish anything beyond wasting precious energy. So I linked with the others and filled them in.
It's like Zeke wanted you to look bad,Miles linked, his disapproval heavy.
That thought had merit. Zeke did have a way of skewing things in his favor.Well, Theo is with him, so hopefully, we’ll get some real answers.
We should declare Theo the new advisor,Carl added.Zeke agreed to it already. Now that he’s healed, we should make the transition happen.
I trusted Theo more than Zeke any day. Theo hadn’t known who I was or that my memory was blocked. Zeke had kept too many secrets that didn’t sit right…even if he’d done so for my protection.I’m good with that, but we need answers from Sybil first and then to return her to calm Lynerd down. The last thing we need is for Zeke to tell the Oregon packs that we forced him to step down.
We fell silent. I didn’t even have the desire to turn the radio on.
Jasmine gasped, and I turned around to see where she was looking.
“What’s wrong?” Bodey asked. His own gaze darted to the sides of the road, searching for the threat.
“Maybe my friend’s pack could help us.” She stuck her head between our seats. “Her dad is an alpha advisor—like you, Bodey—in the Midwest territory, and maybe they’d be willing to help us fight the queen.”
Bodey exhaled. “Next time, don’t almost give me a heart attack. I thought we were under attack.”
She blushed. “Sorry. I just got excited.”
“You think they’d help us?” I raised my brows. The thought had merit. “They’d be our allies?”
Samuel scoffed. “Callie, you can’t possibly be considering this. If they learn that we’re under attack and weak, they could begin attacking us on top of Queen Kel. We could be worse off than we are now. It’s too much of a risk. Besides, we’re about to see Sybil and get answers.”
“Her father and pack aren’t like that.” Jasmine pouted.
“You don’t know the others. Just the one girl. You can’t be serious.” Samuel then linked to just me,It’s too dangerous.
I nodded. Samuel was trained for this. He’d know better than me. “Let’s see what we find out from Sybil.”
“But—”
