I nodded. “The best.”

I love you too,he linked and kissed me.

We’re here, bitches,Jack linked, completely ruining the moment as the front door opened.

Bodey tensed and pulled back. “He has the worst timing.”

Picking up both our bags, Bodey took my hand and led me downstairs, where Samuel, Lucas, Miles, and Jack were. The four fathers were at Michael’s, loading up, and Stevie, Stella, and the three other advisors’ moms were staying with Janet while we were gone. After the attack, we wanted them to stay together in case something went wrong while we were away. More shifters would also be patrolling the area.

“Follow us,” Bodey said as he locked the front door and waved for us to follow him.

As we went to the vehicle, I linked to Jack,Did you tell Stevie goodbye?

Yeah, sure did.He smiled, but there was sadness in his eyes.I hate leaving her, especially when she’s so insistent that she and I shouldn’t be together.

Be patient with her.I patted his arm as we made our way to the garage. We grew up in a pack where strong wolves didn’t even want to talk to us.

Fuck that shit.Jack scowled. And don’t worry. I’m never letting her go.

I smiled, thrilled that my sister had someone willing to fight for her.

The four of them got into Jack’s Navigator while Bodey and I climbed into his Mercedes-Benz. Then our group was off, heading toward the city with the dads behind us.

Though we wanted to bring a lot of strong wolves to the city with us, we couldn’t risk leaving our people vulnerable again, especially if the queen somehow learned about Stevie. The plan was for the packs along the Oregon and Idaho borders to be there with us in case Queen Kel attacked.

“Turn on the music and relax.” Bodey took my hand as he pulled onto the road. “We’ve got a long ride ahead.”

* * *

My phone rang, startling me awake. I opened my eyes, my neck aching from sleeping upright in the car.

I glanced at my phone. Queen Kel's name flashed across the screen.

“Where are we?” I asked, trying to get my bearings.

“About thirty minutes away from one of my packs that’s housing us,” Bodey replied.

That was right; Zeke was driving down in the morning, and the rest of us were staying with Bodey’s people on the Oregon side of the state line.

I answered the phone, putting it on speaker. I noted that it was close to six in the evening. “Hello?”

“Hey, Callie.” The queen sounded arrogant. “I hate to do this, but we need to change the plan.”

My hair stood up on the nape of my neck. “What do you mean?”

“We need to meet tonight. I can’t meet tomorrow. Can you be at Split Creek, Nevada, in two hours?”

Do you know how far away we are?I swallowed nervously. We could be three hours out, for all I knew.

Tell her two and a half hours,Bodey linked, his knuckles tightening on the wheel. He then linked with the advisors, former advisors, and Samuel, informing them of what was going on.

Heart pounding, I took a deep breath.

Why is she changing locations?Samuel asked. That sounds like she has something planned.

Something was off, so I cleared my throat. “Why the change? We should stick with our original agreement.”

“Because, though I have no intentions of harming you or anyone you bring, your group has no reason to not arrive ahead of time to seek retribution.” The queen huffed as if explaining herself was hard. “It’s safer formethis way.”
