“Wait,” I said, hating how she jerked. “Maybe we should just head home,” I said. “I’m a little worried that Nancy might show up bright and early tomorrow. Just to be a thorn in our sides.”
“Oh, okay. Sure,” she said, hitting the down button instead as I tucked myself away.
“Just give me one minute,” I said as we stepped out of the elevator.
By the time I came back out of the bathroom, Tessa had a covered plate in her hands and was waiting for me near the front door, keeping a close eye on Cat, who looked ready to take a swipe at her.
“Ready?” I asked.
“I stole more cake,” she said, looking a bit mischievous. “It was great but I feel like it will be amazing eaten in pajamas in front of the TV.”
“Can’t argue with that,” I agreed, leading her out the door and to the car.
“Do you really think Nancy would show up the morning after our wedding?”
“Honestly? I’m almost certain she will.”
“Ugh,” Tessa grumbled. “Not bad enough that she wouldn’t approve of us being able to go on a little honeymoon.”
We’d floated the idea of traveling together to the mental health facility. Even though I couldn’t go in.
But Nancy had squashed that real quick. She claimed it was ‘kind enough’ of her to allow us to marry in the first place. She wasn’t going to ‘entertain’ any other requests.
I guess I couldn’t be too annoyed about it. The most important thing was the marriage itself that would allow Tessa to go see my mom.
That was the whole point of this whole thing, after all.
The thing was, though, as I opened the apartment door to let mywifestep inside, catching sight of the ring on my finger, it suddenly didn’t feel like theonlyreason anymore.
Though, I had a feeling it was going to be harder to convince Tessa of that…
CHAPTER NINETEEN
Tessa
I’d crawled into bed on our wedding night while Rook was still in the shower.
And thanks to a long day of uncertainty, stress, and so many orgasms that I still felt a little buzzy, I was out cold in minutes.
I slept hard and deep, only waking up when there was a loud rapping at the apartment door.
“What?” I gasped, shooting up in bed, my heart hammering against my ribcage, making it feel like I couldn’t breathe.
It was only then that I realized I hadn’t been sleeping alone.
“It’s okay,” Rook said, his voice soft as his hand moved out to squeeze my knee. “Sounds like Nancy’s knock,” he added as he climbed out of bed in nothing but a pair of thin gray sleep pants.
I didn’t expect the rush of desire at seeing what I’d literally been seeing daily since I moved in with Rook.
That said, now I was very much aware of what that body felt like, what it could do to me.
My body warmed as he moved out of the bedroom, and it wasn’t until I heard Nancy’s voice that I realized I was sitting there in a lightweight short and cami set that did very little to hide, well, anything.
“You could put some clothes on,” Nancy said by way of greeting as she stormed into the apartment, heels clicking on the floor.
“You woke us up,” Rook said, following behind her as she made her way into the bedroom before I could even think to get up and get a sweater.
Panicked, I yanked the blankets up to cover me as the look of disgust on Nancy’s face was sent in my direction.
