A Sasquatch?
I remembered scanning a flyer posted on the front door when we’d first entered. It reminded me of a headline in the Enquirer.
Fuck! What was wrong with me? I was listening to a woman who was zooming high through another world, talking about Bigfoot. Yet my gut told me to listen. Those newspaper articles often held more truth than people realized.
“There!” The woman pointed behind me to a stack of old flyers, where a drawing of the creature was sketched out on the page. “I’ve seen the thing myself. It’s large and furry, and it smells like ganja.”
Right.“When exactly did you see it?”
“Nine years ago. They say he tries to escape the forest every year at the same time, but I’ve only seen him that one time.”
“Who says?”
She looked me over from the bottom up and back down again, as if wondering whether she should tell me.
“Lumberjacks. They stay here every month before they go in to work.” She then reached underneath the counter and pulled out an unlabeled bottle filled with clear liquid. “They bring the best moonshine I ever had.”
Looking at her now, I realized that the woman was not only high but also drunk.
Fuck this!
If she started talking about aliens landing in her backyard, I was going to lose it. I shook my head, thinking how stupid it was of me to leave a ready woman splayed out naked on my bed to follow a popping sound. Instinct aside, I was foolish.
Lola was waiting for me outside our motel room.
“What did you find out?” she asked, popping her gum. That thing was beginning to irritate the fuck out of me as well.
“A big load of nothing.”
“Well, you wanna know what I found out? That when a woman who’s about to have a fucking orgasm is deprived of one, she loses all her mojo.”
She turned on her heel and stormed back into the room.
Yeah, it looked like I would be stuck with blue balls myself, at least until we arrived at our destination and I had a chance to make it right with Lola.
I pushed the door open and met her deadly stare as she sat in a green armchair, her legs and arms crossed.
“Lola, I’m sorry. I just want you to be safe. I want us both safe. If someone’s got Xavier, then they’ve had him for a long time, and we need to take every precaution we can. You should understand that in your line of work.”
She sighed. “Fine, you’re right. I’m sorry.”
What?I did not expect that.
“I can see when I’m wrong, and I admit it,” she explained. “I don’t like doing so, but I admit it. We need to keep our guard up, which means I need to keep you on your toes.”
What?
The only toes on my mind at the moment were hers.
“You have no idea how much you’ve just turned me on.”
“Well, turn it off, because we need to get some sleep if we want to head out at sunrise.”
Shit!
She wasn’t in the mood; or if she was, she was certainly making it seem like she wasn’t. From my experience with women, I had better not sneak into her panties in the middle of the night. Although maybe that was a good idea. Why did I question myself so much around her? If right now was a definite no, then I had to pace myself. I had to wait for the right time because there was no fucking way that I was heading out into the woods with wood in my pants.
I watched her sink underneath the covers. Lola shifted, the curve of her hip lifting the sheets.
