“Are you all right?” he asked.

I lowered myself to pick it up, lying through my teeth, “Yeah. I’m fine.”

I’d been torn over our connection for months. My client was Cameron’s target, and if he found out, he’d make my job of protecting her impossible. But he was falling for her. He actually liked her, so maybe there was a chance to avoid confrontation? Maybe I could wait it out, then tell Brook. This relationship and my job were getting too complicated.

I’m a ghost, I reminded myself.Ghosts stay quiet for a reason.

Just.

Stay.

Quiet.

The Madden men had no clue that Kate was the culprit behind their troubles, and I’d keep it that way for as long as I could. As Kate said, there was always hope.

“Sometimes what you think you know is good for you is actually bad, and what’s bad is good. You know?”

Brook laughed. Kate was good for Cameron, and he was good for her. They just had a few tiny obstacles to overcome — like the fact that Cameron was pretending to be a priest, and neither of them knew that they had a common enemy.

“What’s so funny?” I asked.

“You talking in riddles.”

“It’s a good thing you can’t hear me thinking.” I reached for his chest and rubbed the sponge over the sprinkle of black hair. “Just so you know, I would usually be skeptical about a relationship with anyone at this point, but with you, it feels not only right, but also easy. Too easy. I guess I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

“It won’t drop. I promise.”

Oh, it would drop all right. It was just a matter of time before it did.

He wrapped his arms around me, shielding me in an embrace. Water dripped over us and I didn’t want to move. I wished I didn’t have to move. Tonight felt so perfect, and I hoped that if the other shoe didn’t drop that it wouldn’t kick us up our asses either. I shivered.

“Are you okay?”

Change the topic.“Yeah, I just realized that I orgasmed in a missionary position.”

“What’s wrong with that?” he asked.

“Nothing, I guess.”

“Lola, I’m more than willing to explore other positions with you. This was just… nice. Unexpected, if I may add, but nice.”

I didn’t want it to feel nice. I wanted him to know, that despite our possibly crossed roads in the future, this thing between us was so right. I felt like I’d always belonged in his arms, and that scared me. The enormity of how amazing the few hours I’d spent with him felt was beyond words. I didn’t want anything to go wrong. I didn’t want him to question my past and find all the reasons we shouldn’t be together.

Brook took the sponge from my hand, lathered it some more, and began washing my body. When he drew down the scar in the middle of my chest, he stopped, and our gazes connected. I watched a million questions swim in his eyes — questions I couldn’t answer.

“Listen, no background checks, okay?”

“Only if you promise to tell me when you’re ready.”

“I promise.”

He continued washing my stomach, my hips, between my legs, and my feet. Though his dick was hard and standing tall, he resisted the urge he must have felt and only concentrated on me. Any other man would have fucked me three times over by now, but Brook was not just any other man.

“Can I tell you something that’s special? Something that makes me the man I am today?” he asked.

“Of course.”

“I’m a godfather to Jax’s daughter. Sophie’s my goddaughter as well as my niece.”
