Great. Now she had four to six minutes to kill with the hottest guy this side of the Atlantic Ocean. It was either talk or have sex on the hood of his Charger.
Desperate to make conversation, she asked, “What did you mean earlier when you said you were going away soon?”
“I meant that I’m going away. Soon,” he answered dryly.
“Smart aleck.”
He merely shrugged.
“Okay, I’ll play along. Where are you going, Trevor?”
“It’s best if I don’t tell you.”
She frowned at him. He sounded serious. “Why not? Is it classified?”
“Not exactly.”
“Then what is it, exactly?” she asked, a little exasperated. Getting a straight answer out of him was like trying to squeeze water out of a stone.
“It’s exactly none of your business.”
He was right, of course. But, she was a SEAL, and as nosy as the next SEAL about her comrade-in-arms. If he had a problem, it was her problem, too. She changed tactics. “I’ll ask Cal. And you know I can weasel anything out of him. You might as well tell me what’s going on.”
He made a sound of disgust, and she bit back her smirk. After all, it wasn’t nice to gloat in one’s triumph.
“Fine. I’m leaving the States,” he bit out.
“What? Why?” Ohgod, ohgod, ohgod. Had she chased him away?
Another disgusted noise. “You’ll find out about it anyway, so I suppose I should go ahead and tell you. I’m going after Kenny.”
Everything inside her went still in shock as she absorbed that news. She blurted, “As in a rescue mission? Are we green lighted? It’s about damned time—“
“Not you. Not the rest of the Reapers. Just me.”
“I don’t understand.”
“I’m going to find him and bring him home. Alone. Me. By myself.”
“That’s crazy—“
“I don’t need you to rip into me, too. I already heard all the reasons not to do it from Cal.”
“Ahh. The fight this afternoon.”
“Yeah. That,” he replied heavily.
“Won’t it be ridiculously dangerous to run a solo operation in that part of the world?” she asked.
“It won’t be an official SEAL operation. I’ll be operating under the auspices of another government agency.”
“With a support package, yes?”
“No. No support. Just me.”
“Are you clown posse nuts?” she burst out.
He blinked. “Clown posse?”
