The corners of her lips lifted. "Yeah, if I can make my legs work."
I knew there was still more to discuss, but that could wait for later because, right now, my girl had come back to me.

"Happy birthday, Kai," Trystan said through the phone. "I'm sorry I couldn't be there, but I'll make it up to you when I get back."
Every birthday since I moved in with Jax and Trystan was the same. First, a family dinner, and then Jax, Trystan, Harlow, Syn, Cam, Owen, and I would do whatever I wanted for the evening.
This year was different.
This year, my dad and Jax's mom were gone on business, Trystan was still touring, Cam was on her way to visit Trystan, Harlow went with Syn to some convention in Redrock, and Jax planned a special surprise just the two of us for my birthday.
This would be the first birthday in years I didn't spend with everyone, and I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed, and I felt even guiltier about that.
Jax had gone out of his way to plan a special night for me, and I was appreciative. I just missed the way it used to be, but I guessed things couldn't stay the same forever.
Traditions had always been important to me. Even more so after losing my mom, but I knew as I aged and life changed, traditions had to, too. They had to account for new family andlife changes, but it didn't change the fact that I missed the old traditions.
"It's okay," I said, trying to hide the disappointment in my tone. "When will you be home?"
"We have two more concerts, and the tour is over."
"And what happens after that?"
"We don't have any plans yet, so I'll be home for a little while." I thought about asking him about him and Cam but stopped myself. If he didn't offer the information, it wasn't my business. "Sorry, Kai, I gotta go, but happy birthday."
He disconnected, and I sighed.
"You ready?" Jax asked, popping his head through the doorway, and I couldn't help but smile at the sight of him. He was mine, and I was his, and there was no more confusion about where we stood with each other.
I followed him out of the living room and into the kitchen to exit through the garage, but I spotted a bright pink card with my name written in cursive on it and a small black box next to it on the counter. "What is that?" I pointed to the card.
"My mom and your dad left that for you." He swiped the card off the kitchen island and handed it to me. "You should open it."
Quickly ripping the envelope open, I pulled out the card that read:Happy Birthday!Flipping open the card, a white sheet of paper fell to the floor, but Jax caught it before it hit the floor and handed it to me. It was in Jax's mom's handwriting.
Dear Kaia,
We are so sorry we couldn't be there for your birthday, but we promise we will make it up to you when we get back.
Happy Birthday, Kaia. We love you!
PS the box is for you and Jax.
My gaze flicked up to the hand-sized square box. "It's for both of us."
Jax picked up the box and opened it to find two keys and another note.
"As you both know," Jax read his mother's words, "we had the pool house renovated this past week, and after careful consideration, we've decided to gift it to the both of you as a couple. You are adults, and you should have your privacy."
"I don't think they want to hear us having sex." I laughed.
"Your bedrooms will always be yours if you ever need them," he continued. "We love both of you. It's signed from my mom and your dad." My gaze raked over Jax's face, and I wondered if he was having a mini panic attack because he had no reaction to the letter. His face was completely void of any emotion.
"Jax?" I said, and his gaze flicked up to meet mine. "Are you okay?"
I could visibly see the panic fade away when his gaze met mine as the corners of his lips curled up, and he nodded. "Yeah, we spend every night together anyway. We've shared a bathroom since we were kids." He slipped into my space, and his hands curled around my hips as he pulled his body flush against mine. Dropping his head, he brushed his lips against mine. "But you know what this means, right?" The heat of his breath sent a rush of heat over me and straight down, settling between my thighs.
