I madethe fifteen-minute drive to the hospital in eight minutes.
Cam was waiting for me at the entrance when I pulled in. Her eyes are red and swollen, and her face is streaked with tears.
"Where is she?" I asked, pushing past Cam. I needed to see Kaia.
"Jax."
I didn't stop. "Take me to Kaia."
"Jax," Cam said louder this time.
"What?" I whipped around. "I want to see Kaia." Anxiety pulled at me that wouldn't go away until I saw her. Until I knew she was okay.
"She's in surgery."
"What the fuck happened?" I managed to huff out in one breath.
"She was practicing with Parker, and during a lift, he lost his balance, and she fell." My chest clenched. "She hit her head pretty hard and somehow had a gash in her leg. We think maybe Parker's skate got her."
"How bad?"
"She was unconscious when EMS arrived. The entire rink was covered in blood."
"Where's Harlow and Syn?"
"I'll take you up."
I followed Cam through the entrance and to the elevator to the sixth floor. My heart hammered in my chest as the elevator doors chimed open, and we stepped into a waiting room where Harlow and Syn were pacing the floor.
"Has anyone called Trystan?"
"I called everyone," Syn said. "Mom and Robert are trying to get the next flight out, and Trystan too."
"I don't understand how this happened," I said. "Isn't Parker like one of the best figure skaters out there? How did he drop her and then skate over her."
"Because he was still drunk from the night before," Syn said. My gaze snapped up, narrowing on Syn.
"What do you mean, still drunk?"
"Harlow and I left the party over on Lexington Street early this morning, and Parker was still there drinking."
"I noticed his skating seemed off this morning," Cam said.
"He's fucking dead." I whipped around, anger burning in my chest. "Call me as soon as she's out of surgery." I stormed toward the elevator. Parker was a dead man walking.
"Jax. No," Cam shouted, grabbing at my arms.
"Go away, Cam." She wasn't going to stop me. I jerked myself free from her grasp. She didn't go away. She jumped on the elevator with me.
"Don't do this, Jax."
"Keep your phone on you." I hit button one. "My sister can help you get bail money together for me." The elevator chimed open, and when I stepped out, I nearly ran into Owen.
"Stop him, Owen," Cam ordered. "He's going to end up in jail."
"What the fuck?" Owen said, stepping into my path. I tried to side-step him, but he moved with me. "Jax, I don't know what's going on, but right now, Kaia needs you." I stopped, my gaze meeting his. "We can go to jail later. I'll even go with you."
He was right. I couldn't leave now. I'd never forgive myself if something happened to her.
