"What's up, Cam?" the tallest of the two said. "We were starting to think you chickened out."

"You fighting tonight?" the other bouncer asked.

"No, just checking the place out. Any sure things tonight?"

"All newbies tonight," the tallest bouncer said, and Cam's lip curled into a snarl. I had no idea what they were talking about, and I didn't really care. My pulse thrummed so hard in my ears that I found it hard to focus on the conversation.

"Kaia," Cam said, and my gaze snapped up to her. "Are you coming?"

Well, I damn sure wasn't staying out here by myself. "Yes." I followed her through the main entrance and into a crowd of people, and I suddenly didn't feel overdressed anymore. Everyone was dressed up. Not suit and tie dressed up but nightclub dressed up.

The smell of sweat and cigars overpowered the massive, dimly lit area. The only brightly lit area was the caged fighting ring in the middle of the floor, with crowds of people around it shouting as the two men in the cage tore each other apart. This wasn't my thing. The sight of blood made me queasy, but this was what Cam lived for.

"Do you want to hang back here?" Cam shouted over the crowd. "Or do you want to get closer?"

"I'll just hang back here."

"I'm going to go place a bet and then see if I can get closer."

I forced a smile and nodded. "Have fun. I'll be right here." Everything about this place gave me bad vibes. Cam disappeared into the crowds, and I jumped when my phone vibrated in my hand. I was definitely on edge.

It was Jax.

Jax: How's the girl's night going?

Holding my phone with both hands, I stared hard at the screen, trying to figure out how to respond. I could confess where I was, but I knew he'd be pissed, and he would probably drop everything to get here. Or I could pretend to be having a great time and not in the middle of an illegal fight club.

Pressing my lips into a thin line, I decided pretending was safer. I started clicking out a vague response, being careful not to actually lie.

Something big slammed into me, knocking me to the ground. "Ouch. Shit."

"What the fuck, man?" a deep voice growled. I shuffled to my feet as my gaze flicked between two massive men.

"Do you have a fucking problem?" the other man snarled. His fist clenched, and his nostrils flared.

"You should watch where you're fucking going."

Fuck this. I hadn't been here for five minutes, but there was too much testosterone pumping through the air, and I wanted to leave.

Kaia: I'm sorry. We are at the Cages.

I hit send and waited as the tension built between the two men. I was going to find Cam and get out of here.

My gaze flicked up to gauge the situation, and one of the guys shoved his fist through the other man's face. "Fuck." I tried tomove, but there was nowhere to go as the crowds surrounded us. Someone bumped into me, sending my phone flying and me to my knees. The one-on-one fight turned into a massive brawl, and I was right in the middle of it.

I was so fucked!

Whipping my truck into the dirt parking lot, my truck kicked dirt up behind me.

"Are you sure this is the place?" I snapped at Owen. The Cages were never in the same place. They moved after every fight to avoid attracting unwanted attention. Luckily, Owen was invited by friends who were going, so he knew where it was or how to figure out where it was.

Spotting Cam standing by her car in the darkness, I slammed on the brakes behind her, threw my car in park, and jumped out.

"Where's Kai?" I growled, my tone laced with venom. I didn't have time to jump down Cam's throat right now. That would have to wait.

"Jax, I'm sorry." Cam wrapped her arms tightly around herself.
