“Mckenna, we’re almost there. The reservation isn’t going anywhere,” Mace says.
I look out the window. “I know but I want to get there already. Can’t you go faster?”
“Absolutely not. You’ll have to be more patient.”
“Mace, it just goes straight from here. There aren’t any cops so go, go, go!”
He doesn’t go, go, go as I want him to. He actually drives slower than before, with a shit-eating grin. I roll my eyes as far back as I can. It’s enough for him to get back to the pace.
I’m practically jumping out of my shoes. The ride towards Big Sky is endless and like we’ll never make it. Mace’s still giving me confused stares but laughs it off. I want him to be surprised so I say absolutely nothing even though I’m tempted to.
Gnash, Dario, and I have been planning something for Mace. It took quite a while but we finally get to show him. To keep it a secret until now has been a challenge in itself. Especially for Gnash.
“I know you said you weren’t gonna tell me, but can I at least know what it’s about?” Mace asks for the millionth time.
I playfully smack his arm. “It’s about you!”
He rolls his eyes. “Ha-ha, obviously it’s about me. Just give me a hint, we’re practically here already.”
“Exactly, you can wait like five more minutes. It’s gonna be great, I promise!”
Finally, we’re here. I pull Mace by the arm towards the entrance. He chuckles and follows behind me.
“You know, I’d think you have some canine in you,” he says.
“Canine? For what?”
“Your excitement resembles a puppy’s,”
I smack his arm again. “You did not just call your girlfriend a dog!”
He grabs my wrist. “Girlfriend? You mean my mate. That’s a thousand times better.”
“Yes but a loving mate wouldn’t drive like a damn grandma. I’m not gonna let that go, y'know?”
He kisses the back of my hand.
“Please forgive me, my love mate. It’s just adorable to see you pout while shredding me to pieces in your pretty little head.”
Now I playfully roll my eyes. I keep pulling by his arm and he just gives in. We walk to the main center of the reservation. The main attraction here are the brand new buildings.
Mace’s eyes brighten and widen. He looks up at the new additions. His mouth opens in awe as he stares at each building individually.
Although I saw them before he did, I still can’t help having the same wonder. It looks completely different than before. It gives the feel of a healthy, safe, and thriving environment.
Mace turns to me, still in awe. His eyes glisten. I get misty eyed too. I’m happy with the way it turned out. Seeing how Mace is overjoyed is the cherry on top.
“What do you think?” I say, grabbing his hand.
“I love it. It looks so…different. But in the best way possible.”
“I’m so glad you like it that much,”
“Did you do this?”
“We all did,” Gnash says from behind.
I smile at him and Drario walking up towards us. Mace turns around, perplexed at their sudden appearance. He’s more-so surprised by Drario being there.
