“Hey!”

MCKENNA
“Hey!” I yell out to grab their attention.
The guards and my father turn towards me. His eyes widen when he sees who I have under my arm. He narrows his eyes when I point the gun over Natalie’s shoulder.
He takes out his own gun and points it at me. The room becomes still as we have our own little standoff. My wrist shakes but I hold the gun tighter to not make it show. If I falter now, they’ll kill Mace right in front of me.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he asks.
“Mckenna, get out of here! Leave!” Mace yells.
The guard points the gun closer to his head. As a warning only. He stares at me pleadingly while having a hint of desperation.
There’s nothing I want more than to save Mace. He’s always there at my rescue whenever I need him. Just this once, we both need to be patient. Otherwise, I will continue living, never knowing the full truth of my “family”.
I shake my head. “No. I want answers.”
I, myself, point the gun to Natalie’s head. She stiffens at the touch of the barrel. Not so arrogant now, bitch.
“Put your gun down,” I say to my father.
“I will not. I don’t trust that you won’t do something utterly stupid again.”
“Fine. Have it your way.”
We stand there staring at each other. He scowls at me after glancing at Natalie. It pisses me off even more. I press the gun harder against her temple, and click it.
There’s a small gasp from Natalie. Acting cocky all this time brought her to this. No, messing with my father got her here. The consequences of being loyal to a dirty and terrible man.
His narrowed eyes turn into slits.
“Put the gun down, Mckenna. You’ll end up hurting yourself more. Is this really worth it for you?”
I bite the inside of my cheek.
“Why do this? Why are you going so far to get rid of them? What did shifters ever do to make them be so hated by you?”
He exasperates. “Because shifters are the scum of the Earth. Humans need to be restored to power, like they were before the Veil fell.”
“That’s your only reason?”
He rolls his eyes. “What? Do I need any other justification?”
“It’s just not logical.”
It’s not that they were in power, we just didn’t know of each other’s existence. Even in the “human world”, there’s still those who have more power than others. It’s just the natural order of things. Even then, humans still fought to keep their place as the biggest predator.
In hindsight, it’s pathetic to see. It’s also very typical of human behavior to feel threatened by something they don’t know. Their first reaction will always be to get rid of it. The biggest and the baddest are also the weakest.
“What makes you think it’ll go back to how it was before? You don’t know if major wars will break out. You can’t expect shifters to just submit and accept your plans.”
“You sound so pessimistic. Shifters are not as advanced as humans, which puts us in a major advantage. They are brutes and thrive in chaos. Their disorder of running things will ultimately be their downfall.”
“How hateful of you,” I spit.
