“Well, did you?”
“No, I can’t see that much from here.”
“Then maybe you should break inside like McKenna told us,” he says with impatience.
“Alright, alright, just give me a minute.”
I break the window. As also mentioned, the alarms are set off. I climb through the opening, followed by Gnash and Drario. The lab looks like something from out of a movie. Flasks, tubes, steam, and odd colored chemicals.
We upturn our noses at the intense smell of the chemicals. We crinkle our noses, instinctively sniffing the air. I don’t know how to describe it other than strong and synthetic.
The only ones inside the lab are two men with lab coats and a face mask. At the sight of us, they freeze and glance at one another. They hold different objects in their gloved hands. It makes me think that we’re not safe being uncovered in here.
“Who are you? How’d you get in here?” one of them asks.
“Which one is the scientist Mckenna told us to kill?” Drario yells through the noise.
“I don’t know, she never specified how she looks. Just kill them both!”
Drario kills the one who questioned us. The other, trying to run away, is caught by Gnash. He is killed as well.
Meanwhile, I search for the documents detailing the plans and chemical compounds. I don’t bother looking for anything that’s not paper. I search in every cabinet, drawer, and desk that’s not filled with glass. I even look on the floor to see if anything fell.
I snort my nose to get the odor out. We have no idea how this mix can affect shifters. Now’s definitely not a good time to deal with sudden surprises.
Every time I get my hands on a paper, they’re just worthless scribbles. Others have random math formulas that aren't solved. Some are pieces of paper just dated back to 20 years ago. I rip the papers when it’s not what I need.
Drario approaches me. “You got them?”
“No, I can’t find them anywhere! I literally looked everywhere!”
“Did you check every drawer? What about underneath the desks?”
“Drario, when I say I looked everywhere, I mean everywhere.”
“Well, what do we do now?”
“I don’t know, there has to be another place they hid it. We have to get out of here already.”
“We still don’t have the documents, Mace.”
“I know but I don’t feel right breathing all these chemicals in—”
Suddenly, the alarms go quiet. We look around the lab to find whoever it was that turned them off. Then, we get a very distasteful greeting.
“Very good boys.”
We’re interrupted by another voice. Just hearing it grates my ears. From a few feet away I know Gnash grits his teeth. Almost to the point of breaking them.
I turn and see Rovas Grayson. I clench my jaw. My hands turn into fists. A growl rises from all of our chests.
The abhorrent man stands at the edge of the broken window. He holds a folder in his hand. My heart sinks to my stomach when I realize what they are. I try to hide my panic from him, to not give him any satisfaction of our foiled plan.
“I almost thought you would get away with it,” he says tauntingly.
“How did you find us?”
He scoffs. “It’s not hard to find the location where the alarms were set off. Besides, I didn’t think you wouldn't be sniffing around while my daughter tried to 'distract’ me.”
