Mckenna starts to walk past me but I reach out and grab her arm. She stops and glares at me. I glare back.
“What are you hiding? What is it? It could be something that we need to know. Whatever it is, just say it. I promise we can handle it.”
“Fine,” she says as she shakes her arm from my grip. “You really want to know? You really think you can handle it?”
“Yes, we can. Please, it’s clearly bothering you. You want to tell us, just tell us!”
“Insignys is in cahoots with the government, okay?”
Time stops around me. Now I understand why she was hiding it. If this is true, it changes everything. I'm not sure how to react to this just yet.
Insignys is working with the government? What does that even mean? Can this even be true? Can it?
“I-What?” Is all I manage to say as my brain tries to process this information.
“Insignys is in cahoots with the government,” she says in a firm matter of fact tone.
Why would they be working together? What purpose would that serve? This doesn’t make any sense. What am I missing here?
My confusion and shock at this revelation is quickly replaced with anger as I fully process the news. Of course, they’re working together. I should’ve assumed they were sooner.
Insignys hates shifters. The government pretends to support shifters, especially in election years, but we all know the truth. Them teaming up almost makes too much sense.
Who cares what purpose this serves for them? Who cares what goal they’re working towards together? Whatever it is, it’s bad news for me and my fellow shifters. Not just Big Sky Clan, but everyone.
“Who in the government?” I ask.
“What?”
“Who exactly is working with Insignys? What branch? What organizations?”
“Who do you think, Mace? PEACE. My father is working with PEACE.”
Fuck. Again, that almost makes too much sense. I could’ve assumed that it was PEACE. I was just hoping that, against all odds, it wasn’t them.
‘PEACE.’ What a joke of a name. Big Sky Clan has heard tales of what they’ve done to other wolf shifter clans in this country. If you don’t do what they say, you likely aren’t long for this world. They wipe you out and claim it was all in the name of ‘peace.’
If PEACE has their eyes on Big Sky Clan, and the other clans in the area, this is not good. This means we need to free Gnash now and do something about these tracks immediately. There is no time to waste.
But, fuck, I need to know more. I know it doesn’t matter, whatever they’re planning will be bad. But I need to know everything that Mckenna knows about their partnership. If we’re to survive I need to know exactly what we’re up against.
I look at Mckenna, “Why? Why are they working together?”
Before she can say anything, the sound of a helicopter echoes through the area. I scan the open blue sky around us, I can’t spot it, but I know it’s on its way. We all look back and forth to each other. Natalie looks nervous.
“Natalie? What did you do?” Mckenna barks.
“Nothing! I promise!” She looks at Jax for support.
“I was with her,” he says. “She didn’t do anything.”
“I thought you said they couldn’t find us here.” I say with anger.
“They can’t! Or they shouldn’t be able to. I promise they don’t know about this place. They’re probably going to my old place. It’s not far from here.”
“You’re fucking kidding me.” Mckenna scowls at Natalie now.
“Well,” I say. “If they’re in a helicopter, they’ll probably be able to spot us!”
