“Fine, Jax, lead the way.” Jax, with a new pep in his step, shows us the way to Natalie.

Mckenna looks at me. “Who is Natalie?”

“No idea. But I’m guessing it’s one of his friends with benefits.”

“Oh…”

“Yeah, let’s just hope it’s one of the ones who still likes him.

MCKENNA

Oneof Jax’s friends with benefits is a girl named Natalie Sotes. She’s a pretty blonde that’s out of Jax’s league. Her house is a cute little abode that looks over some of the red rocks. She waits for us at the door, leaning against it with a smile.

Once inside, Jax is the first to greet her, since he’s the main contact. They greet one another with a kiss, one that lasts for a good minute. The type of kiss you give your partner when you haven’t seen them all day. She even circles her arms around his neck and caresses his hair.

Mace doesn’t seem to care but for the love of God, please stop. It’s clearly obvious they’re in love with each other. It’s also clearly obvious that they haven’t said anything yet. After breaking the kiss, there’s a lingering moment in their gazes before moving on.

I sigh internally. Great. She’s stuck in this mess now?

“Thank you for helping us on such short notice,” Jax says to Natalie.

She smiles. “Why wouldn’t I? Not like I was doing anything else.”

Jax raises his eyebrow. “So if you did have plans you wouldn’t have responded?”

“Not like that. I mean that it's no bother having you guys. Make yourselves at home.”

Mace and I both respond with a ‘thank you.’ He relaxes his damn hold over me. Even the way here he held onto my arm - it’s leaving a fucking bruise already.

Per Natalie’s request, I make myself comfortable by taking a seat on her turquoise colored sofa. I try not to bring attention to myself even though it’s just the four of us here. I’m still considered the hostage. There’s no point in making friends.

“So, it sounded like you were in some kind of emergency when you called me. Has anything happened with the clan?” Natalie asks Jax as she offers us a glass of water.

The latter laughs awkwardly. “A lot’s happened in such a short time. I wouldn’t even know where to begin.”

So he doesn’t want to tell her everything. Got it. That’s why they’re not together, if they don’t have open communication. Oh hell, what the fuck do I know relationships?

I accept the water from her and drink. My thirst is finally quenched with the cold drink. That’s the downside of living in the desert. Sand makes its way into my throat and makes it like sandpaper.

The glass is taken away from my mouth. Mace has it in his. He places it on the coffee table that looks like a tree trunk.

“What the hell?” I say with a glare.

“You weren’t drinking anything. You would’ve choked. You’re welcome,” he says in the least sincerest way possible.

I respond with a broken southern accent. “Well bless your heart. Ain’t you such a mighty fine gentleman? How could a girl like me be so lucky?”

“I was trying to be nice. Don’t have to use that annoying accent.”

“Maybe I wouldn’t have to if you were actually nice.”

His response to that was a grunt. That came out of nowhere. Suddenly he wants to be considerate? The captor wants to treat his captive like a damn human being?

Revolting.

Jax and Natalie are having their own conversation in the kitchen. We can see them through the opening that separates the living room and stove. Their faces are bright, which means that whatever they’re talking about is too.
