She giggles between kisses. When she breaks it, she smiles sadly at me. No doubt for the sight of my tears. She gently wipes them away while peppering kisses over my face.
She presses her forehead against mine.
“I hope I did him justice,” she says, her voice quivering.
“You did more than that. This is a wonderful gift. Because of this, we can have a piece of him forever now.”
She nods, biting her lip. I kiss her when I see a tear fall down. I hug her tight again, this time, Gnash joins in. He places his arms over us, his tears not dry yet.
We get a few more tears before separating. We wipe our wet noses and cheeks. A lovely older woman offers us a handkerchief. We gratefully accept and our faces look a little back to normal.
We stand around, smiles plastered on our faces. The peace and tranquility we’ve been chasing so desperately is finally here. It often felt like an unreachable feat until today. We can breathe and actually feel alive.
Mckenna stares at the statue. I have a feeling we’ll all be like this for a couple of years now. At least we’ll always be together for it.
I take her by surprise with a sudden kiss.
“I wanted to do this wherever we wound up on the vacation.”
She tilts her head in confusion.
“But this is the perfect place for it to happen.”
Before she can question me, I get down on one knee. She gasps and covers her mouth. Gnash and Drario are agape. The crowd also gasps.
“Mckenna Grayson, my beloved mate, there are no words to describe how in love I am with you. I wake up every morning, wondering how I got so damn lucky to have you in my life. I don’t know what I’d do without your stubbornness, your outspokenness, and your braveness.
“Everything about you is perfect in each way. Your beauty and kindness know no bounds, but it was the strength of your spirit that made me fall deeply in love. I tried to deny it for a long time, but it was hopeless. Now I get to proudly call you mine. I just want to make it more official. I love you so, so much. Please, will you marry me?”
Cheers erupt amongst the crowd. Drario and Gnash yell and whistle behind me.
“I will, I will marry you!”
I take out the ring and place it on her finger. Soon after, we’re embracing again. Exchanging kisses and whispering sweet nothings to each other. Despite the thunderous clapping, I can only concentrate on her. My bride.
“How long were you planning this?” she asks, looking at the ring.
I scoff. “Not since I figured out you were my mate.”
She gives a knowing smile. “I see. You had me waiting for a long time, big boy.”
We both laugh and give each other a chaste kiss. Then, Drario approaches us after being done cheering.
“You know, we could do it here. I’m licensed by the state and there’s no reason you guys should wait. Let’s make this happy occasion even happier.”
“You’re ordained?” I ask, almost chuckling.
He shrugs. “What’s wrong with that?”
“I just never expected it.”
“Well, you never know. But aren’t you glad? It’s the perfect moment for my license to be put to good use.”
Drario turns to Mckenna. “What do you think? Should I marry you guys right now?”
“But I don’t even have a dress or anything! I can’t get married with these clothes.”
Gnash interjects. “Actually, with your new implemented laws, we had enough money to open up a bridal shop in the reservation. You’re the boss who made all this happen, so the price of the dress and whatever else you need is on us. You’ll have shifters help you. We’ll get everyone involved.”
