The first to react is Drario. He laughs loud enough to make an echo. Ganesh and I stare in confusion.

“What’s so funny about it?” I ask.

“You’re the last one to know that,” he says.

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that it’s more than obvious. You’re protective of her, it’sclearyou can’t keep your hands to yourself, you went after her when she’d get kidnapped. Hell, you won’t let any of us get near her even when we might just walkbyher. Should I also mention how crushed you were when you met her husband?”

“Exhusband,” I growl.

He points at me. “You see? What the hell made you think she’s anything other than your fucking mate?”

Gnash pipes up. “I thought you said you didn’t know and ‘could be anything’.”

“I said it wasn’t my business. Now that you said it out in the open, we can have a say in it.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Uh, no you don’t. This is between Mckenna and me. You wanted to know, now I’ve told you.”

I continue walking.

“So how long have you known?” Gnash asks.

“I said Ithinkshe might be.”

“C’mon man, why do you dance around it? She’s your mate, point blank.”

“Gnash, I really don’t want to talk about it right now. Besides, we don’t know if we’ll make it out alive. I can’t make plans until we get the job done.”

“Alright, I’ll leave it alone.”

“Thank you.”

We keep walking in the same direction. It’s been almost half an hour and I don’t think we’re even near the opening. There’s no definite markings to let us know where we are down here. The warning signs have been of no help at all.

“What do you think Jax’s reaction would be down here?” Gnash asks in a somber voice.

I chuckle. “I think after Mckenna mentions it, he’d have a panic attack. The sewers are a combination of all his phobias.”

“Isolated, gross, suffocating as fuck. Also the unknown.”

“It wouldn’t be this quiet with him here.”

We both laugh, knowing it’s true. He’d be complaining and freaking out before entering the manhole. He would also be the one trying to evade Gnash’s questions for me.

Drario walks slower behind us. I think he might be giving us space to wallow in our grief for a moment. Funny enough, down here’s the only place where we can mourn peacefully for Jax. Since we’re always on the go, our minds are at full speed, along with our emotions.

“I really miss him,” Gnash mumbles.

He looks down at the floor. Then he subtly wipes away at his eyes. I don’t blame him. I’m doing the very same thing.

“At the very least, we can be at peace knowing that we were all singing before he died,” I say, choking up a little.

“Yeah.”

I wipe my eyes again. I clear my throat and straighten myself out.

“It’s time we get justice and figure this plan out. Not only for Jax but for our clans.”
